Ahoy!
I am playing the campaign and about 25 missions in. I am now using manual targeting now and finally figured out what is going on....Phew that was hard!

Anyway I am schedualled to patrol of the coast of Florida, then I went down to the gap between Cuba and Haiti to hang about and see what come through. Well, a big C3 tanker sailled through at 12Kts in terrible weather, I gave chase and at 300m it became visable, I wacked it using fast 90 targeting with a 3 torp salve (one missed). It sank.

However here is my main question. On my map and TDC the ship was RED, it shot at me before I shot at it. When I saved and exited the patrol (in mid patrol) the breakdown of the mission says I shot a neutral??

Why does the mission synopsis say it was a neutral? It was RED, and it shot at me!!

WIll I get posative or negative renown??

That's all for now

Thanks

press F1 and check the list of dates neutral countries can be attacked on the list (are no longer neutral)

If it shot at you first then it was definatly at war with you. Maybe you sank another American ship earlier on patrol? If you sink a neutral their country will be hostile towards you for the next 24 hours.

You can change the points given/removed for shooting enemies/neutrals in basic.cfg (I think). Because neutrals are not properly represented (running without lights at night, supplying weapons to Britian, etc) I changed mine to '0'. This way I still try to avoid sinking them but aren't punished if they get in my way :know: .

It has been my experience that neutrals will fire on you if they feel threatened. At least it has happened to me. One night in particular I spotted a convoy and closed in to see a flag and identify their nationality. It turned out to be an American convoy and started to back off when the escorts started dashing towards me. Long story short they tried to sink me and I hadn't fired at them... guess I got to close for their comfort.

I find this behaviour plausible and correct. Neutral ships will feel threatened if you get to close to them.

As for why it showed red on the map I don't know... I never turn the map auto-update on.
