looks a lot like the british type 45 hms daring thats being launched 1st feb.
but considering project horizons history thats no surprise.
Andrea Doria... The name is familliar.
In deed.In Italy he is very well known. He was initially infantry commander, partecipated in the Genoese rebellion in Corsica and in the attack against the French garisson of Genoa at about 1500.At some point he passed into the navy, where he was more successful as pirate hunter and had some repeated cat and mouse encouters with Harreydin Barbarossa,a famous Ottoman admiral (or pirate depending on the point of view) who was plundering the Italian coastal cities. At the end he gained many distinctions and noble titles. At the beginning, the name Andrea Doria was to be given to the new Italian carrier, but for some reason they changed their minds and gave the Doria to the Horizon and the carrier will be named Cavour.
Does anyone have the specifications?
Take a look at this. It's an awsome AAW frigate.

yeah its pretty much the same as the daring
http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/horizon/
but the daring doesnt carry torps as it carries more missiles and room for more if needed, the daring also uses the mk8 4.5'' naval gun which uses the new HE shell for an effective range of 27.5km compared to the 76mm installed on the horizon that have an effective range of 16km and a lower damage rating. the 76's do have a much higher rate of fire though but they are pretty much useless for shore bombarding.
they also use different radar systems as the uk were concerned about the radar being blocked so the more versitile sampson radar is used on the 45
6 45's have been ordered with 8 the target by 2014.

The Stockholm rammed the Andrea Doria, not the other way around. Therefore, it is not crazy to commemorate the Italian admiral once more.

We should say no more boats with the name Stockholm...stuck home! :rotfl:

Wow!
She looks almost featureless. No textures and minimal bumps and bulges on the upper decks and towers. Is it just me, or does it look like exactly like a videogame design for a low res model?
:hmm:

Yes. Very beautiful. I'd love to see what she has in the way of sensors. Is she going to use the ASTER's with the PAAMS systems for air defence?

The rumor is that they did not have the software to make higher polygons models...

Apparently, they didn't hire the Silent Hunter 3 development team to design their ship...

The Stockholm rammed the Doria because she was in the way. That's the way the rule of the road work ; you only need one good watch to avoid a collision. It's not like a car, where whoever was moving fastest at the time of collision is responsible. With her extra speed, Andrea Doria could have easily cleared the Stockholm, but instead, her master decided to go ahead with a very close passing (Less than a mile), in fog, without a radar plot.
The Stockholm's OOW screwed up too, that's without doubt. But you need two ships screwing up to have a collision.

not true the RMS olympic collided with nantuket, the nantuket was a light ship it had been there for years not moved and yet the olympic still hit it only one ship at fault there
JSLTIGER
01-27-06, 09:16 AM
Yeah, but that's not an entirely fair example as the Olympic didn't have radar.

Running into a lightship, a buoy, an oil rig, is not, AFAIK, a case for the rules of the road.
Very, very few cases have held only one ship at fault, and these are usually really dumb cases (IE, one of the ship was docked, or one of the ship had really really crappy lawyers) or strange court decision that will be overturned in appeal. So much stuff that can be interepreted differently in the rules (The concept of "Good seamanship"). Essentially - and it's logical if you think about it - if you get hit, you weren't maintaining a proper watch, else you'd have avoided the other vessel.
I believe that there have been cases where a vessel at anchor was held partially liable for a collision. Even at anchor, a ship has to sound signals, keep a proper watch by all available mean and, if it becomes evident that another ship is going to ram it, take all available action (Paying out the cable, VHF, starting up the engine and moving, veering the cable...)
Cases were fault is unilateral are very, very, very, very, very rare.[/quote]

Of course, equally are at fault to have come so close to each other. Even if they are following an imaginary line, it is somewhat weird to see two big ships collide in this vast ocean. :nope:
Still, the Stockholm is the one who turned almost 90 degree to hit Doria... while going straight would have avoided the whole story, as the Italian captain had considered. :ping:

its all to do with reducing the radar signature, the same princaples are applied the royal navys type 45 which evolved into being after the UK left project horizon sick of france and italy changing their minds.
