Hey all, Im new to SHIII. I got it last week and havent stopped playing yet... I was just wondering if I should be saving my renown or spending it on all the upgrades. I have a VII-C and have been on 9 patrols.

On a seperate note, anyone ever play Silent Service II for DOS? It was the first vid I ever played, dad taught me to play when I was 5 I think. Feels great to be back in a sub.

Welcome on board Oleif.

I played Silent Hunter II in the early 90's. It must have been for DOS, because Windows 3 was released after that.

Welcome Oleif!

My best guess is that you will stay with your brand new VIIC for at least 15 missions before upgrading to an IX. Make every of these missions count and gather a lot of renown. Then go to a IX-B and when you hit mission ~40-45 an XXI. But you will need 30.000 renown for that.

As far as individual upgrades, my view regarding their significance (in order):

- Radar Detector
- Hull coating
- Countermeasures (Bold 1, 2 etc.)
- Snorkel
- Radar coating
- Conning tower with heavy flak
- Homing torpedoes
- Engine upgrade
- Sonar
- Radar
- Battery upgrade
- Other todpedo types

Have fun!

Hey Oleif, I played Silent Service on my Atari 1040ST back in the 80's. Great game - I thought.

RUB contains a loading screen add-on that describes important events of the month prior to your patrol start date. SHIII Commander now comes with a night club you can visit before your patrol to get the latest gossip.

Other than those two, I don't know.

Oleif,

Search for a mod called Radiolog. It gives you the feeling of the era and the war.

How do these mods work? Are they ment to be there as in does it change any of the pre programmed aspects of the game? should i play through a regular campaign before I start up a modded one? Can i start a mod in the middle of a campaign?
