Yes... that is me.

Well, I decided to pick up SHIII just because... I have never played a naval combat sim before. I feel I have the capacity to learn though, seeing I play many flight sims to full realism :D

Anyhow.. I was strolling through the store and saw this:

http://images.barnesandnoble.com/images/9160000/9166454.jpg

And I thought hmm... well, it looks kinda neat. I'll check it out.
So, I got it installed, patched, fired up. Did the Naval Academy.. and wow.. I'm floored! This game seems pretty dang cool. And to top it off... a campaign! woohoo! I always did like U-571 and Hunt for Red October...

So.. here I am, at the #1 site for Naval Simulation :D and I am asking you guys for help.

I like to play sims at as real as I can get, but I am constantly having to slap myself from using the f12, free look view. No no! But it just seems very hard determining the position of boats etc underwater! Any tips, tactics, etc? :D

And.. along with realism, I gotta ask something. The water. I have never seen such clear, crisp, water! Which.. isn't very real :damn:
So, I went searching around for mods, and bam.. here I am. With a HUGE selection of mods. So.. this where I also need your help...

For someone who desires realism, etc... what mods are a MUST HAVE and what mods do you recommend? I guess I could try them all out one by one, but.. I figure you guys know ALOT more about it than I do!

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to becoming an active member of this community!

P.S. Yes I really do get sea sick quite easily. I dunno why on earth I bought a Naval simulation

RUB or IUB (wich contains RUB) are the best mods (the do a lot includeing limiting visability underwater)
Also get Jscones mod enabler ans SHIII commander - good tools

Thanks :)

Also....

I have a Radeon 9200 (yes, I am outdated), so I get those black triangle artifcacts that flash on the skyline alot. Esp around boats. Any fix for this anywhere at all? :(

If not, no biggie. Just wondering.

I always did like U-571

Welcome aboard! Hope you enjoy the game. But be careful mentioning enjoying U-571 again. Especially to any British forum members. ;)

No biggie and not to worry. It's just that the movie despite the good special effects is considered a historical travesity around here. It also has more than it's share of glaring technical flaws in the eyes of U-Boat purists.

LOL i was wondering if somone was gonna make notice of that. Ill go out on a limb and say U571 was a good hollywood movie, but thats all it was.

Anyway welcome aboard, sub games can be addictive. The reason U571 is practically a 4 letter word (hmm it is.. never thought of that), is because its so full of historical inaccuracies that anyone familiar with that historical timeperiod gets a headache looking at it.

Forget that rubbish - see "Das Boot".

It is the holy grail of submarine movies.

Don't let the Das Boot fan club dismay you CSik. You're still welcome here. :)

But check it out if you have time. ;)

Nice site :)

I installed IUB, and it seemed very cool. Except..

It made those black artifact missing sky thingies appear so much more than the stock game, that I felt like screamin "the sky is falling! the sky is falling!". Disabled the mod, and the artifacts were reduced to one or two every couple mins, instead of a constant 8-10, flashing everywhere.

Oh well :( Too bad I can't afford a new video card. Ima have to wait until I can get a new one :(

Hiya and welcome :)

I am also using an outdated card (ATI9100) and get the same issues as you - I have found that by using just RUB instead of IUB, I can have realism without the graphics card throwing a hissy fit. You might want to try that out see if it works. I'm also using the latest SH3ommander without the Sh3commander skin pack and everything runs smoothly.

Of course, when I finally get around to updating my PC, I'll be updating my mod selection also maybe :)

Again, welcome and good hunting :lurk:

The main reason you might want to use RUb versus IUB is that IUB uses the 16km visability mod versus RUb using the 8km visability mod. The 16km visability mod may be far more realistic, but it is almost twice the drag on your video card as the 8km visability mod (this is why the original game is only 8km visability).

Once you upgrade to a more powerful ATI video card (not nVida because SH3 does not like nVida drivers), you can then try the 16km visabilty mod without the black objects on the horizon.

In my early days I was totally unable to load and play SH3 on my desktop. I was able to load it on my laptop and it worked (still works, in fact). I had the original nVidia card and it just wouldn't work. I hauled butt down to Best Buy and got a new ATI card. Life has been good ever since.

No regrets here either Kaptan Tommy on my conversion yet - switched out my trusty 5950 (Nv) last year just for this game and with Omega drivers I get explosions that Spielberg would love

Hey, Down Periscope was filmed outside my hometown of Benicia Ca.at the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet aboard the USS Pampanito out of San Francisco. It's also where Jack London was a game warden in the 1890's patrolling from San Pablo Bay up into the Sacramento/San Joaquin River delta. He wrote a series of short stories of his experiences there entitled,"Tales of the Fish Patrol". when I was a kid, I used to sell the local newspapers in the same bar that Jack used to frequent in those days at the end of First St in Benicia.

If you do a websearch on Jack London, you can find an online copy of the stories. I recently reread them and they are a great picture of life on the Carquinez Straits at that time.
