View Full Version : Type VII-B vs. VII-C
last night i ´bought´ a VII-C
but just now i was checking the manual, the only diffs between this and the VII-B are :
* VII-C takes 3 seconds less to dive
* VII-B runs faster when submerged 8 kt vs. 7.6 kt
So is it really worth upgrading ??
I think i´d rather go a little faster underwater then a shorter dive time !! :( :(

I looked into this before I 'upgraded', and decided not to do it. I'm waiting for a chance to upgrade my flak guns on my old VIIb. Then maybe I can play 'shoot-em-up' with the torpedo boats mentioned in another topic. :yep:
I played a campaign with VII-B mostly.
This was last year, i cant remember what ship i upgraded too, but there´s another VII-x that supports a different conning tower, and this tower supports 2 or 3 flak guns at the same time. . . :o
it´s fun... u just shoot down wave after wave of planes. I used to run flank, surfaced, zig zagging and waste all ammo on my way out from the base to mid-sea !!!   The sad part is that they dont give u lots of renown !!
Make sure you have flak-gunners on your crew.
I once saw a file, with a map, of all upgrades, along a time line. Just make sure you wont miss it.
I think they both end up with the same max speed when you get the engine upgrades. The only real advantage the C has over the B is that you can upgrade the conning tower a lot further to get more flak guns.

Oh.... So if I want the upgraded flak guns I should upgrade to a type VIIc? Nuts. That's gonna cost me renown that I thought I was gonna have available for the upgraded guns - someday. :(
Tommy,
this is not exactly a sugestion, but take a look at this....

In my fisrt campaign, i didnt use it. Actually i only use the convoy routes map mod.
But now i made this ´renown upgrade´ (hehehhe  ) because stuff are just too expensive, like a type VII-C costs 2500 renown !!!
I made it 4x on regular renown, and i can tell you i am happy with it !! :D :D
p.s. I play with 45% realism !! :D :D
BTW, what´s the NV on your location ???

Thanks for that link, canimo. I just may give that a go. At least until I get an upgraded conning tower and higher octane flak guns - ha. I just found out though, that bad weather means you can't send the flak crew up, just like you can't use the deck gun. I was hoping because the flak installation was up higher I'd be able to fight air attacks no matter what. wrongo........ What a bunch of wimps! Then again, I guess if the boat is heaving in the seas, they couldn't hit anything anyway.
Oh, and the NV is the abbreviation for Nevada.
My realism is in the 70's somewhere. I think 74.
I think the wimps do get to the deck if wind is above 5m/s.
I once saw a topic here, that about changing this wind speed limit, lets so to 8m/s. I may do it, in my new campaign that i started this week. Take a look too. :D :D

If you plan on going all the way through the war, the upgraded VII-C, with the three flak positions, is a strong asset. There are times in 1944/1945 when long distances must be traveled in shallow water while defending against aircraft. The narrow channel leading to Bergen being one example.
Also, the massive firepower can make-up for non-qualified flak-gunners. U-262 lost her two qualified flak-gunners to a lone Sunderland in early '42, just before getting the three gun conning tower. We continued for the rest of war with non-qualified gunners and knocked down our fair share of planes when diving wasn't an option.
Good hunting!
VIIC is also able to dive down deeper an extra 22ft :yep:

I didn't know about the increase in diving depth. Is that 22ft., or 22meters? This forum and the game are both great because of the constant learning process. I'm still experimenting with crew combinations and qualifications for minimum crash dive times, crashing in shallow water, gunnery effectiveness, etc.
Been playing most evenings since the game came out and still enjoying it tremendously. Still have a life, but mostly without TV!

So, does this mean that if I don't upgrade to a VIIc I can't get the heavy duty flak guns and upgraded conning tower? Drat! There goes a lot of renown...

I'm pretty sure only the VII-C gets the large conning tower with heavy guns, and some of the other upgrades developed during the course of the war.
Try not to waste renown on upgrades that were questionable, like anti-sonar coating, and a differant engine.
Upgraded batteries, large conning tower(VII-C/4?), and radar detector should be acquired as soon as offered.
I added radar, but it drew so much attention when it was turned on I soon got rid of it.

Actually, it was 22 extra meters. My bad -
