just as the morse code post, i would like to make 1 but with the enigma machine.
you can download the enigma simulator from here:
http://www.simulacionnaval.com/Portal-Simulacionnaval/html/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=24
the link is called "maquina enigma oficial de sumulacionnaval.com"
(dont worry the program is in english)
you can download it learn to use it and then post msgs and decode other msgs. (just give all info needed to decode the msg)
tutorial:
1-open the machine by clicking in the white screw in the right side of the rotors. http://img498.imageshack.us/my.php?image=enigmacerrada15jb.png (the arrow with the number 1)
that should show the inside of the machine with 3 rotors, click on them and then click in the lower part (where 2 other rotors are plased) to remove them. you should see this: http://img64.imageshack.us/my.php?image=enigmaabiertanorotor6nm.png (you can see 5 rotors in the box and the B wide reflector, let not touch the reflector for now.)
you can select the rotors by clicking on them and then clickin on the slot you want to place them on (for the first message i placed the 2nd rotor in the 1st slot, the last rotor in the 2nd slot and the 3rd rotor in the 3rd slot walzenlage 253)
if you click on a rotor but you dont place it anywhere you could see the ringsetting of the rotor (the A-01) and you can change it (B-02 C-03 and so on.) thats the ringstellung (for the msg i used LQV) you can see the ring setting here: http://img79.imageshack.us/my.php?image=enigmaabiertaringseting7wv.png
once that is setted you can press in the upper side of the machine to close it and move on to the next step, the steckerverbindungen.
http://img498.imageshack.us/my.php?image=enigmacerrada15jb.png (click near the arrow with the number 2)
and you should see something like this:
i cant load anymre imgs, i get "could not find server" so i will finish the tutorial as soon as i can.
i'll start:
walzenlage: 253
ringstellung: lqv
steckerverbindungen: ak em fh jq no ru
start position: ojk

Ok, i just don't get how to use it! I guess I'm so stupid! Well, can anyone make a tutorial with pictures on how to use it?
if you press in the square in the upper left side of the enigma machine or press f1 a help menu should open with instructions to use the program.

then duty calls, i'll use my (poor) english to make some kind of tutorial

This is a very perplexing thing.
we cant decode it without the start position, the connections and the ringsettings :S
My bad!
Right, gonna try this again.

didn't u-boats have a 4 ring enigma machine? i'm sure they did.

From the manual for my machine
"2. Set the start position to EHZ, the first trigram of the message
3. In this position, decode the second trigram TBS to retrieve the message-key. This should result in XWB
4. Set the decoded message-key (XWB) as start position on the machine.
5. Now decode the rest of the message..."
Basically it's a decode within a code. You set the start as EHZ, type in TBS to get XWB and then use that as the start for the rest of the message

So when the Captain in Das Boot mentioned a triple-encrypted message, he had a further trigram to do?

Alrighty, you've set up all the rings, rotors and plugs right.
Set the start to EZH and then type TUP which should decipher as YPD
Now set the start to YPD and type in the message.
Triple encoded...hmmmm....I guess that would be 3 Trigrams instead of two....Gonna give one of those a try in the next post.

Sehr Geehrt!
I have been investigating using Enigma for a while now and thought the following may be of interest.
The first site below is a source of much information, with pics, from Bletchley Park. You will need to browse through the various parts of this extensive site.
The other site is by a dedicated Enigma fan in Holland, who is also very helpful with advice. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
It is, to me at least, the best Enigma simulator with a simple set of instructions.
He also provides a source of codes, BUT, whenever you generate a set of codes for a particular month it will be different from any other set generated for that same month. Thus people who want to use the sim must generate one set of codes then pass them on to all users.
If any of you guys would like to contact me at off site at <hmsironduke@ozemail.com.au> (it's easier for attachments), please feel free. I have a been working on creating forms to use with Enigma based on originals, as well as a manual based on the original German one.
Just for interest I also have a continuous A4 template for KTB's in Word.

Hope this helps!
