Golden Palace buys that kind of crap (Britney's pregnancy test, etc) just to get publicity, as they cannot advertise over many mediums, being a "gambling establishment" and all that.
It's not about the kidney stone. It's about the publicity they get from it.

Shatner has enough money to found his own foundation and keep it running, if charity really is what he is about. That stunt was more for his ego and publicity, than for charity.
I'm sorry, being a star of a former TV show is hardly much of a legacy to risk.
