- Added an extra 1,300 towns to the birth place list to reflect the birth places of almost all U-boat Commanders
- Realistic crew now has more voice and complexion variety
- Minor interface tweaks and code improvements
New included mods:
- Adjustments to allow selection of U-boat emblem at start of career - by Rubini.
- Fix which forces correct Mediterranean water textures when playing career in 29 Flotilla - concept by Marhkimov.
There are two configurations available for download. Note that prior to installing this release you must uninstall your current release. Don't forget to rollback SH3 Commander first and back up any SH3 Commander files that you may have modified!
1. SH3Cmdr24.exe (http://members.iinet.net.au/~jscones/software/products/SH3Cmdr24.exe). This is the standard installation release and will be the file downloaded via the SH3 Commander "Updates" feature. Size 19.7mb
2. SH3Cmdr24.7z (http://www.beerymod.com/SH3Cmdr24.7z). As per #1, but without installer. Size 19.4mb
Please note that to keep download file sizes low, the ship skins no longer form part of the core SH3 Commander download. Should you want the ship skins, you need to download the SH3 Commander Combined Skin Pack Add-on (http://members.iinet.net.au/~jscones/software/products/SH3CmdrCSP.7z).
Read instructions before installing and read 'SH3Cmdr Help.html' after.
As always, please post your questions/feedback/problems to this thread. Further information and FAQ can be found here (http://members.iinet.net.au/~jscones/software/SH3Cmdr%20Help.html).

Yeah! 2.4 is up and working, a big thank you.....
One problem that I cannot find an answer for in the FAQ or elsewhere is that it doesn't seem to like Improved U-Boatv102. SHIII starts from SHIIICmdr until Improved U-Boatv102 is activated in JSGME then SHIII hangs at start up. I did the roll back and deactivated all mods first but still this problem?
Also I'm a little unclear about the extra skins (which are installed as per the instruction) does SHIIICmdr automatically select them according to date and is any other mod required to make them work?
Any ideas please?

Is there an uninstall option as part of SH3 commander 2.3 or do you uninstall through windows? Confused because of file size. Windows shows SH3 Cmndr2.3 as 313Megs while the 2.4 d/l is only 20 megs.

As Jaesen described, in 2.4 the ship textures are not included, you have to download them seperately with this version. This was to reduce download size. 2.3 included the textures in the package, which made it so large.
Hope that helps.
Jamie
PS you should be able to select uninstall from the START > Programs menu. Make sure you roll back SH3 first.

There is an Uninstall.exe file in the SH3 Commander folder.
Before you run it, click the ROLLBACK SH3 button in the old SH3 Commander. Then run the uninstaller. Then rename the undeleted old SH3 Commander folder to something like "SH3 Commander Old".
Then you're ready to install the new version. :yep:

I see no uninstall.exe in the Commander folder.
Got the textures already but still wasn't sure if the two d/l's of 40 megs were going to uncompress to over 300megs. Thanks for the info. i didn't want to delete something incorrectly.

I believe the nightclub might be dependent on the date. Sometimes it won't be available. There aren't a lot of entries in it yet...
I guess we gotta wait until someone decides to write a giant nightclub scene that runs throughout the entire war. Well, at least I'm hoping.

My saved compressed files show SH3Cmdr 2.3.exe to be 44,227 KB (44.2 MB) and SHCmdr 2.3.7z as 32.076 KB (32.1 MB).
As a result, the SH3Cmdr 2.4.exe at 20,266 KB without the ship skins is about correct, especially since the CSP.7z is 20.944 KB.
Since the compression ration of "exe" to ".7z" is about 73% that would make the CSP.7z about 26,600 KB if it was an "exe", for a total of 46,866 KB (46.9 MB) if SH3Cmdr 2.4 & CSP were all together. That makes 2.4 & CSP 2,639 KB larger than 2.3.
Hope this relieves your questions.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!!!!
I installed Cmdr 2.4 and enabled seasonable waves. I am on patrol in the North Atlantic in Feb. and the weather is awful. It's cold and miserable and the boat is bouncing around. The waves are washing over the deck and the watch crew is getting soaked. (I got so cold I went and put on a sweater.) I assigned the SOB weapons officer who missed a C3 cargo at 600 meters to watch and left him there.
A convoy is approaching and I'm sure I'll get sea sick when I try to line up a shot.
Thanks for this mod Mr. Scones

Big thanks from me too Jaesen. ~S!~ It looks great.
I've asked the Queen that you be made a Knight for your hard work on the SHIII Commander series. :D Tho somehow I don't think she'll listen to me. I'm only a very very distant cousin, And besides that, I'm on the wrong side of the Atlantic. But I tried at least. ;)

Uh-oh - I was all fired up about trying this out (I've loved the previous version) and was even prepared to just jettison my current patrol so I could start back in port, but when I ran 2.3 one last time to roll it back per the instructions above, the "rollback" button is grayed out and it won't let me do that.
Is there something else I should do in order to get that "rollback" option lit up, or should I just uninstall 2.3 and press on with 2.4 at this point?
Thanks for all this great work, BTW
LOL - I just noticed that my avatar has gone Oriental for some reason - maybe I'm supposed to take my u-boat and deliver some Me-262 plans and atomic bomb materials to our Japanese allies or something now

Thanks and great work once again JScones.
A question for you -
I have decided (for various reasons) to do a complete fresh install of everything, including SH3. I've installed the game, patched it, installed SH3 commander (latest version) and then installed IuB 1.02 using JSGME.
The problem is that now my modified fatigue models no longer seem to be having any effect. The file I originally modified was 'crew fatigue models.cfg' (I made edits so my crew fatigue at a much slower rate.)
I kept this file and replaced it into C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander\Cfg after doing all the new installing. When I run the new version of SH3 commander my model is showing as one of the available fatigue models to choose from and I have selected it but it doesn't seem to be having any effect in game.
More than likely i've stuffed up somewhere but for the life of me I can't figure it out.

Try deleting the two 0 byte wmv files from ...\SilentHunterIII\data\Movies\Intro. Some systems don't like these files. It's inherant with both RUb and IUB (not SH3Cmdr).
Also I'm a little unclear about the extra skins (which are installed as per the instruction) does SHIIICmdr automatically select them according to date and is any other mod required to make them work?
Yes, No. Simply unzip straight into your SH3 Commander folder.

That's fine - a greyed Rollback button means that there are no SH3Cmdr files in SH3. Proceed to the next step. ;)
BTW, if you are upgrading from an earlier version of SH3Cmdr, you can safely install and run the upgrade when mid-patrol. You prolly can too if you have never installed SH3Cmdr before, but I haven't tested that aspect thoroughly.

I have a Question, when starting a new carrer what is the diffrence between Standerd SH3, Data, or Realistic for the crew config?
You installed straight over the top of your previous version didn't you? 'Cause if you didn't, the "Data" option would not be there. ;) If this is the case, I recommend a full uninstall and reinstall as you'll have files in your Date and Random folders that are no longer needed.
Anyway, "Standard SH3" means that the stock (or whatever is already installed into SH3) crew config files are used.
"Realistic" means that the SH3Cmdr crew config files are used - these are based on actually U-boat composition as best as SH3 will allow.
You can add your own crew configs, for example, the crew of U-46 or whatever, quite easily by creating a "U-46" folder under "Crew" and then the "data\cfg" folder structure. See the help file for more details.

I assume you upgraded from R2.3? If you upgraded from R2.2, then that could be your problem, but we'll go there only if we need to.
Have you checked your Basic.cfg file after SH3 has loaded (ie alt-tab back out and then check Basic.cfg to see if your values have been correctly inserted)? Try that and let me know.

Yeah, there was never any intention that the Nightclub would have 100's of entries upon release. I'm quite happy that it has as many as it has - only one month has no entries, the rest have between 1 and 5. I'm sure some imaginative people around here will very shortly have updated files with more entries.

Aha! Active careers but not in mid-patrol.
Thanks. I was beginning to worry it was one of those 'men-only' clubs. :88)
They still exist (http://michellemalkin.com/archives/004296.htm), FYI.
Very nice update to SH3CMDR. Thanks for adding the family name to the list. We had a few "Black Sheep".
I will enjoy the game even more so.
Actually Avon Lady, there are still some "ladies only" clubs too. Just saw one open the other day, aerobics, I think.
Nice update to SH3 Commander...downloading now and looking forward to seeing the Nightclub
Thanks. I was beginning to worry it was one of those 'men-only' clubs.
I don't think there is anything wrong with "men only", "women only", "Blue blooded only" or any "...only" clubs as long as they are private associations.
Anyway, i would like to quote here the great Groucho Marx and his unique sense of humour, as he wrote a letter to a club resigning and saying as the reason: "I don't want to belong to a club that accepts people like me"
:rotfl:
I can't wait to see the nightclub in action :D
Though I don't think they will say anything that will suprise me ;) .
The additional names will be great too, I only managed to add ~100 names to my own list.

Actually that was the Beverly Hills Country Club. They had a long-standing "No Jews" policy, which they suspended just to ask Groucho to join. Of course he refused, and it wasn't until a reporter asked him why he would turn down a membership offer to America's most exclusive club that he (being Groucho and not wanting to cause trouble or sound bitter) replied "I have my standards. I wouldn't join any organization that would have me as a member!"

Just a quick question for which i couldn't find an answer.
I currently have 2 careers saved. In the case of one of my careers i was in the middle of a patrol when i installed the latest SH3Cmdr ( By the way, it's absolutely great  ! ) and later on when i finished this patrol the total tonnage for it did not show in the main screen of the personal file.
But the strange thing is that all the details for that patrol can be found after accessing the particular patrol log.
As i continued on other patrols everything shows up in the main screen of the personnel file except the numbers for the patrol i was on when i installed SH3Cmdr.
I've been comparing what i think are the sources on which the personnel file is based but can't find any obvious problems, so i don't have a clue as to why it's no adding up the numbers.
Any idea what it could be ? It's not a big deal but it still kind of irritates me

I'd try one of three things:
1. Rollback SH3Cmdr, then reload the save patrol straight in SH3. Finish and see what you end up with this time.
2. Sacrifice the patrol and restart from scratch (note, just the patrol NOT the career).
3. Manually update your Patrols.cfg and Careers.cfg files based on your log_40.cfg and keep going.
Unfortunately, you've been exposed to an SH3 bug...generally, it only appears on the first patrol if you upgrade before starting. Curiously, did you upgrade before starting the patrol in question?

Thank you very much for me pointing in the right direction  I never did check the patrols.cfg....
I was looking for anything odd in the logs and career files and i never figured the problem might be in the patrols.cfg. I've checked the file out and all values for that patrol were listed as 0  So, now that i have adjusted those everything is OK again.
To answer your question, i did not get any upgrade before this patrol. So i don't understand how this could have happened but it's solved now !

? Any changes made to terrain display - colors?
I am not really sure if it was the rollback, deletion of old then new install of Commander but now I am very pleased so far with the ocean/weather.
North Atlantic looks very close to what I recall from trips to Iceland - the sun/sky/clouds even the water color.
TY again

 I must have done something wrong, I downloaded the latest version, I input the right date and type of sub (Single mission) launched SH3 then when the mission started I got a black sky/sun and a funny colour sea.
I rolled back and launched SH3 the normal way and everything was OK again, what have I done wrong or what have I missed?

:hmm: might help out if we post some specs if we have contrasting video results with new Commander.
I am using ATi based x800xt PE running (2.6.87) Omega drivers.
Maybe color issue related to card?

Jscones,
thanks for your continuing work on the excellent SH3Commander!
now there's a little problem with the new Comander 2.4. If I choose realistic crew I have a *speechless* 1WO. That means I don't hear voice from him. this only happens with "realistic crew" setting. Problem seems to be in the crew configs of SH3Commander for the realistic setting:
In all files the CREW_MEMBER_0 has a value VoiceIdx=0
It shouldn't be zero. As Crew_Member_0 is always the 1WO there's no speech assigned to him.
Could you check into this please?
Finally I'm back at my SHIII machine, and ah - there it is.
It'll be a pleasure to start up a new career with it (even if it's part for testing mods)

I'd love to take credit for it, but nup, SH3Cmdr doesn't change the terrain.
It does now force the correct water type for 29 Flotilla campaigns, but that's about it.

At some point you haven't rolled back SH3Cmdr before installed a mod that contains "scene.dat".
You'll need to:
1. Rollback SH3Cmdr
2. Disable whatever mod you have installed that modifies scene.dat
3. Re-enable the same mod
4. Try again

:hmm: must have been the rollback then - some of the best I have seen in a long while - but I do change out drivers each time Omega offers a new one.
BTW just installed the latest incarnation of Omega 3.8.205; it seems to improve my image quality even more on SH3.
Fair warning however unless you have experience with beta drivers they can be tricky to use/install....so not for everyone....
In any case JScones thanks seems to be working just fine for me.

I have a small problem with the new v2.4 that I hope someone can help me with.
I did as instructed by (returning from patrol) rolling back v2.3, uninstalling it, then installing v2.4 and everything works great except for one item. The problem is that v2.4 has assigned a new photo of "me".
Is there anyway that I can get v2.4 to use the same old photo of "me" that v2.3 assigned me ???

Yes, thanks! This solved the problem. Speech is ok with realistic crew now.

Double-click on the photo. This will bring up a menu that lets you look through all of them and select the one you want.

I think the problem is more fundamental - installing a new version of SH3Cmdr will not alter the image used UNLESS...
a) the user deleted SH3Cmdr.ini when uninstalling the previous version. This file can only be removed manually, and will most likely only be removed if the user doesn't read the "!!PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTINUING!!" installation instructions (ie point 2). This file stores all your Commander history info and if it is deleted, so are your Commander histories.
b) the user replaced a stock image (one of the 00 to 77 titled ones) with one of their own. Of course, upon uninstallation the image will be removed and upon reinstallation the original default image will be used. If the unique image was backed up first (again, point 2 of the installation instructions), the fix is simply just to recopy it back into the SH3Cmdr Images folder.

OK everyone, if you've downloaded SH3Cmdr24.exe or SH3Cmdr24.7z prior to now and you use the Realistic crew configuration when starting new careers, pls download updated crew configurations here (http://members.iinet.net.au/~jscones@iinet.net.au/software/products/Updated_Crew_Configs.zip) and unzip into your SH3 Commander installation folder.
The new configurations correct some missing crew voices.
They have been added to the full d/l files.

I finally installed SH3cmdr (I know, I catch up slow). And I think I like it, gonna give it a try for a couple of patrols.
But I am wondering about 3 things:
- What happens when I start SHIII the normal way (so not via the SH3Cmdr) ?
- Can I only go to the night club via SH3Cmdr or is it also somewhere within SHIII ?
- When closing theSH3Cmdr it says "game files will not be updated ........." ? why?
:arrgh!:

One thing that I'm confused about... after uninstalling the previous version of Commander (which leaves the .ini file and personnel records behind to maintain an existing career), do I simply run the Commander 2.4 exe and install directly over the top of the remnant Commander 2.3 folder?

- Depends. Ordinarily nothing, but if you have SH3Cmdr files already copied into the game from a previous session, you may find that they are out of date. For example, your news file may give info for April when it is in fact now June (remembering the news file is always a month behind for obvious reasons). But the game will still run with absolutely no problems.
- SH3Cmdr only.
- To remind people that closing SH3Cmdr will not update SH3 files. SH3 files are only ever updated when "Launch SH3!" is pressed.

Commander allredy adds various radio files according to date.
i.e. Commander/date/19390901/sound/gramophone/radio.ogg
U-boot realsimulation.com has some great gramaphone packs that are organised by year.
would it be possible with the current Commander to automaticaly put the tracks of the current and pervious year(s) into SHIII/data/sound/gramophone with out haveing to create date floders for every day of the war and copying the gramophone tracks into every folder (wich would take vast ammounts of HDD space up)
If not, could a feature allowing this be implemented into the next commander version (if there is to be one)?
Thanks

I'm not sure I fully understand, as the files will take up the same HD space whereever they are stored.
Personally, I wouldn't create date folders for *every* day, I'd group the files by month and have a date folder for every month of the war. In this instance the files don't need to keep the same names, as there'd be no need to stop playing the earlier tracks as you progress through the war, unless you really want a sense of rotation (although, my local radio station plays more 1960's music than 1990's!). So, for example:
19390901
-song1 (whatever name you like)
-song2
-song3
19391001
-song4
-song5
-song6
19391101
-song6
-song7
-song8
So, if the current date is 4/11/1939, the songs copied to SH3 will be: song1, song2, song3, song4, song5, the 19391101 version of song6, song7 and song8.
By using the same song6 title, the earlier one of the two is effectively replaced with the latter one, so you won't hear it after 1/11/1939.
Ahhh! I didnt know about that replace function!
Thanks!
If I can find a host I may release a vast gramophone and radio pack orderd by Commander dates
Thanks again!
