Fairly new to this and real impressed with the detail in the sim. Discovered a new one yesterday (unless it's a glitch). I was boxing a C3 cargo and just about at the point of turning in to reach firing point, when I realize the C3 is on fire, and then an explosion on the C3's far side, presumably from someone else's torpedo.
nop .... if you talking about a sub i think its not possible .
Aircraft maybe?, I was near the coast of england the other day making an intercept run on surface when two airplanes appear, first reaction was to dive, but then I noticed they where german, when I reach the cargo it was static and on fire, a couple of deck gun shots and it sunk. We had a beer in honor of the pilots and resume mission.
You probably hit a fuel bunker. A lot of times when you hit a fuel bunker it will start a fire and then a minute later it will explode.
By the sounds of it he didn't shoot so I doubt it was the fuel bunker if not.
I've had this happen to me. I was all set to raise periscope on an approaching contact when I suddenly noticed a destroyed ship icon in a different hue than a regular one where my last contact with the ship was.
It was either a mine that got him, possibly aircraft (although never seen Axis aircraft in game), or just really bad weather.
maybe it hit a mine.
I also saw an enemy merchant suddenly explode and sink as I was still getting into position. I simply dissmissed it as being because of the rough winds and went on my way, only to explode myself a moment later :dead: .

No, I didn't shoot at all. Oddly enough, your mention of a blue icon made me remember this, when I went to the map, I noticed a destroyed ship icon also, but it was in red (and I'm sure I didn't sink another ship nearby). So I had a look at the logbook, wondering if I had been credited with a sinking, but I hadn't.

That's a thought. Beats me if I was near a minefield, wouldn't have though so, since I was about 40 km east of the English coast (I think Lowestoft is the closest city on the map).

Earlier today I was in a beat to death VIIC at PD being chased by a destroyer that came out of nowhere in very heavy seas. All of a sudden one of the rear upper turrets explodes and the ship eventually sunk. Did not see any planes as I was heading down fast but I guess it's possible.
sometimes they shoot themselves
specially the elcos

Mines? There are MINEFIELDS in this game??? *gulp*
Ok...how do I know where I might find them...so I can NOT find them as I dash blindly at top speed after a juicy contact (sunk my first T3 Tanker today, WHEEEEE!!!)

Yup that has happened to me too. I was leaving the english channel and doing a routine scope check before i surfaced, and like 1000meters away i saw a c2 smoking and then 10 mins later it sank. Luftwaffe finally did its job maybe?
"where our are planes and scouts herr goring?"
"hott air, thats all that comes out of that flat slob".
haha.

I have loads of mods installed now, but even in Vanilla, I have seen ships being attacked by the Luftwaffe and sunk.... Infact they once took away my kill by bombing a small merchant which I had already pounded a little with my Deck Gun. I never got credit for it ofcourse as the two Stukas made the final blows.

:hmm: i had a smilar thing happen to me i was running on the surface when i got a contact report of a ship spotted, the sea was calm so i wanted to take him out with the deck gun as it was dark and only jan 1940,i goes to the deck gunto get ready for my first shot and wait for thr range to come down as it was still more than 4000m away, then wham big flash and at first i thought iwas getting fired at until it slammed into the side of a c3 cargo yet only the c3 cargo was showing on the map.a few shots later the c3 was dead as a dodo and the map showed a ship sunk.......whats going on !!!!!! :arrgh!: :arrgh!:

I once had a couple of planes finish off a C3 that I had stuck a fish into.
what is that vanilla mod people talk about ?
what does it do ?
thanks
There is no vanilla mod. They are refering to a unmodded game as being vanilla, meaning plain.
hummm .... vanilla is plain ... so strawberry or chocolate ... could me modded ... :)
i hate being a newbie
oh well ...

You said also that you're using RUb. If it's version 1.45, you have definitely passed over a minefield. The minefields spread all along the British East coast up to 100-150 km out. The mines are set to (at least) 8 metres deep, so you can pass over them in good weather. But in a storm, when the water goes up and down (but the mine doesn't)....!

I didn't say "blue" icon...I said it was a different "hue". It was red, but a "washed out" red...not the same dark red when I destroy an enemy ship. Sounds like it was exactly the same for you as it was me.

Aagghhh, that's it then, I must be right in the middle of them since I'm about 30K off the coast. Will have to tiptoe.

Oops, mis-read it. Same situation then.
