Wasn't the red light to help perserve the night vision for the sailors going up on watch at night?

Yeah, the red lights make it easier for the human eye to adjust to the darkness; it's most useful at night when the crew emerge out onto the conning tower.

... they didn't have anything to do with the condition of the boat, as to whether or not it rigged for diving, or anything like that?

Nope. The red/white lights were purely for the benefit of the watch-tower crews.

Generally, red lights were only used at night, while white lights were used in the daytime.

We all know the deal with U-571....... :shifty:

I'm pretty sure... But I'm still wondering if anyone else has any info about this.

Also, I think blue lights were used too. If I'm not mistaken U 505 in Chicago has blue night lighting.
Going to pay another visit now that the thrill is gone from the new exhibit.
Will check it out.

They blinked in Das Boot as well, but this was only at the LI's console to indicate engine room answer to the telegraph. I don't know if this was actually present in the Ubootwaffe, as I have never served on a U-boat.

If the sky was blue in U-571... I'd run out the door on a sunny day just to determine the historical accuracy of the sky being blue...

U-571 was a great movie! it was as though they had actual film crews on the scene. Rarely have we seen a more honest portrayal, where the ambitions of the director are to tell a true, from the heart story of brothers-in-arms, without consideration of boxoffice draw. Hang on a sec, hard to type holding a crack pipe....

"I am U-571! Kill me!"

That message, tapped in Morse code by the tied-up German engineer on the hull of U-571 to his comrades in the destroyer above during the closing scenes has pretty much summed up my sentiments towards that movie.

"SOMEBODY PLEASE KILL U-571!"

Then we won't have to trash it anymore :D

And to think, Bon Jovi cleaned up his act to play a part in that movie. ;)

He played Lt. Pete Emmett, Chief Engineer. Or Chief Petty Player

Bon Jovi destroying history is a terrible thing, but this scared me to death....

The Few... (http://hnn.us/roundup/entries/4679.html)

I hope the lack of any talk about it means it is a dead project.

Ugh...I checked out that link.

Tom Cruise going from the War of the Worlds to World War Two in the Battle of Britain? Pretty much shoots down the Luftwaffe single-handedly? Perhaps air drops a few Ron L. Hubbard books on the Fritzies as well? *Sigh* Sometimes I think Hollywood needs to listen to that Jack Nicholson line from another Tom Cruise military movie.

I was actually quite impressed with Bon Jovi's acting, though he wasn't a major player. Not bad.

I'VE HAD IT WITH TOM CRUISE! He needs to just go away.

Torplexed, your last line is spot on!
