Anyone played it ?

Only card game I ever played was monopoly and poker :-) I do have a real old version of "Submarine" (bought on ebay) but never got around to play it. Are these games real fun ?

I've played several Card Games, namely the Star Trek Customizable Card Game (CCG) and the Star Wars CCG and found them very fun when I could find players (outside of tournaments at the local card store I only knew 4 or 5 players). I don’t really know much about this game but it looks less like a CCG more of a game with a fixed card set, I surmise that is a lot like a pen and paper war game (like “Star Fleet Battles”) with the cards being markers that in some cases are drawn randomly from a deck. If you like submarines (which I know you do) and want to try a game that is different from computer subsims I say give it a try, there is always Ebay if you don’t like it.

According to the advert it's a solitaire card game. I'd certainly pick it up if I saw it somewhere retail. Been years since I played a paper wargame. Wonder if the system could be adapted to the Atlantic. I remember Strategy & Tactics put out a solitaire U-Boat campaign game called Wolfpack in one of it's magazine issues long ago. It was authored by James Dunnigan. Map art was hideous tho.

I just ordered Silent War the other day. I'll post some feedback on it once it arrives and I get a few patrols in.

I haven't seen that one, but you made me dig out my old copy of 'Attack Sub' by Avalon Hill - unplayed for about 15 years. So any ideas on how I persuade the wife to play?

Here are a few of the unit and action cards:

Silent War arrived yesterday and after spending some time punching out the numerous chits representing every sub in the Pacific, I did a few individual patrols to get the hang of the game. There are several campaigns where you play the role of comsubpac controlling multiple or even every sub in the Pacific, plus a good number of individual patrol recreations where you are just one sub trying to recreate or best historical patrol results of a single sub.

My early verdict is that this game is a winner. The rules are simple and easy to learn, and the flow of the game seems very natural and fun. You have enough decisions to make to feel immersed in the role of sub captain while not getting bogged down in minutia thus making playing the whole war scenario, while time consuming, doable.

If you have any interest in this game, check out http://talk.consimworld.com/WebX?14@87.DDovbSAbL3h.19@.1dcf88c7/329

It's a blog after action report of an ongoing whole war Silent War campaign. It got me hooked and was one of the main reasons I got the game.

Yes it can. They are working on the atlantic version Steel Wolves for a 2007 release. http://www.compassgames.com/steel_wolves.htm

Thanks for the update tedhealy. I'll definitely be trying to pick it up sometime in the future although I can't remember the last time I purchased a "cardboard & paper" game. Good to hear it'll be adapted to the Atlantic as well.

On my 5th individual patrol recreation, I finally sunk my first ship - a 3 ton maru :D Horrible torpedoes and poor subs make the early going rough.

I'm really enjoying the game and I can only imagine it getting better as I move to controlling multiple subs for the entire theater.

This is an awesome game/sim. I just got mine yesterday and the quality is outstanding. I had read the rules (available online) so I was pretty much ready to jump in to run some single patrols. I started out in S-boats which are tough to get kills with.

Today, I started one of the mini-campaigns available online with better boats (T's and Gatos) and am having a blast. I've sunk a CA and Cl along with 11 ships totaling 62K tons.

I rarely play boardgames anymore, but couldn't pass up this solitare sim covering the entire Pacific sub war.

The Atlantic version looks very promising.
