I thought I'd start a thread on this, too.
Should MOB be implemented in the game, so that, for example, in heavy storm there was a chance of a crew member falling over board and be in need of rescue?
It wouldn't have to be that hard to pick him up, just drive your sub over to him (and, I guess, he'd be able to swim towards you, too). There doesn't even have to be a "climb back aboard sub"-animation for all I care if the amount of animations are on the same level as Silent hunter III's (which, as we all know, had pretty few animations - no death animation, for example). You could add a Watch Officer report called "Report on MOB", which told you something like "Extra-vehicular at bearing 093, range 32 metres" (OK, range shouldn't be that exact in SHIV, unless you're playing at a high realism level, but you get my point).
Time in the water, especially in cold water, generates lots of fatigues and might give the crewman an illness, if they're implemented. If you wait for too long with picking the guy up, or if you run him down, he drowns.

I just don't see what a feature like this would add to the simulation (unless it happened very rarely) It might be interesting the first time it occured...then it would just become a repetitious exercise everytime it happened afterwards. Most of the crew of a submarine spent the majority of their time below decks and would rarely be in a position to be swept overboard by a storm in a Pacific Ocean not known for it's exceptionally stormy weather unlike the North Atlantic.
On the other hand I think having a randomn chance factor that a crewman would go down with an regular injury or illness would be a more likely occurance. However since the crew of a typical US submarine was much larger than that of a U-Boat it would be far less critical. I also think picking up prisoners from a sinking warship for intelligence purposes (read prestige points) has possibilities.
I agree with Torplexed that it would start to repeat itself very soon.
But on the other hand, incidents like this were quite a common in uboats. In one occasion, other watch went to relief the current watchcrew and when they climbed up to the tower, everyone of the earlier crew was missing. :cry:
I´d like it to be implented as a option.

MOB drills are very common in the Navy. I remember as a Mid I got to order the Frigate in a big circle to a flare (represting the MOB)...good times....they are important drills because it is so easy to loose a single person in the Huge ocean
now applied to the sim....I think we are another ten years from seeing that level of detail in a Sim....IMHO. Right now basic things works for me...I think more involment (or at least he option to be more involved) in ships systems is something we should have had by now.
You would think twice about going up in a storm.

The weather is so bad that he can not keep himself in position, and washes over board, so how the heck you gonna get him back ? He will be lost forever, you never be able to get him back aboard.
A realistic setting for when men are washed overboard woul result in a complaining community (at least a part of it) because they "can not man deck guns" setting would have to be even more strict then in SHIII. Which original settings cause a lot of complaining. People seem to prefer to have man on the bridge/guns in very unrealictic conditions.
Personnaly I never man bridge or guns in a storm, I am wise and submerge, coming up to PD every now and then, so this man over board thingy would just ad realism for me, which is what I like !

It is true that in SHIII, you seem to be able to man the bridge in the wiredist of conditions.
Perhaps rather then simulating man over boards (I'm not convienced graphically that can be done now and will be possible in 2008), you could have a sliding scale of possibility that your men will be washed overboard, proportionate to the weather conditions if you implement a certain action.
If they are washed overboard, just have them disapear. People would be more willing to make realistic judgement calls that way, and order the boat to go deep.

Why does it need to be man overboard? Just reintroduce rescue downed pilot- similar implemenatation to what was suggested above, but a much more historically accurate mission. By the end of the war, many subs were used exclusively as lifeguards.
Some of my most tense moments in SH1 came from rescuing pilots close to Japanese islands/ships...I'd blow tanks right near the pilot (IIRC you could see them as a small raft), grab the pilot, then crash dive and skedaddle....when it worked.

I miss that too. It was also one of my favorite type of missions in 688(i), SC and DW.

This made me think of U-106 (http://uboat.net/boats/u106.htm) as well. And it came to my mind last night in my IIA as the waves were completely submerging my watch crew. Made me look up where I had seen the incedent so I have the U-Boat still fresh in mind when seeing this thread. :o

Happened to me countless of times. Is that a bug, or did storms actually do that to the small u-boats?
