I've read in a book that the British used battleships to escort convoys, and especially during the time when Sharnhorst and such were on their commerce raiding missions. It's from a german source, but I wonder what BBs were used and had that been the case actually? It would be a very nice element to add to the fast large convoys... :)

I used that spy sat mod once, and he had 2 BBs escorting convoys, made it pretty interesting

It's true. A number of convoys has BB as "far escort". A Task Force attached to convoy against German BB raiders.

Did some casual research on the subject. It seems almost every British battleship or battlecruiser was used for convoy escort during the war. The old men-o-war were used most often. They were there to protect the convoys from commerce raiders as the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the German Hilfskreuzer.

This link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Ramillies_%2807%29) points to the wikipedia article on HMS Ramillies, one of the battleships.

I read about this in Bismarck survivor story - book. He mentioned that battleships protecting convoys was normal.

I havn't seen any BBs escorting convoys in the game yet, though I have found cruisers on the outer rows of some convoys.

I've seen two Hippers escorting a mere cargo ship (ok, granted I was looking at the RND layer from the Mission Editor)

but I still saw it... ;)

This BB typ King George was imbedded in one of two center columns of four ships. It is programmed to speed up when any torpedo approaches.

That's no King George BB... That's a Fiji Class CL.

@Missouri23

Save games will only work when in port. Did you load a save game whil on sea?

In any case, I uploaded the original file for you

One of the things to keep in mind is that BBs may have sailed WITH the convoys, but not IN them. The game, unfortunately, does not model support groups :hmm:

British and later American battleships were used as convoy escorts but as was said as a near by cover force not in the convoy.
The only way to accurately duplicate this would be making a new RND Group and attaching way points and speeds to be close to a convoy. Not an easy job to do or effectively test.
I placed Battleships in my appropriate convoys, that is, the ones that would have had them as a covering force but only at 10% probability.
I also tried them as “escorts-true”. They will appear outside the convoy initially but for some reason if I make a loop around second attack they are back inside it. Same for cruisers or auxiliary cruisers.
I have been playing 1943 careers lately which have no battleships.
The American units assigned to this were the New York, Texas and Arkansas and included NA routes then mid Atlantic until the NA and Sicily invasions when they started shore bombardment until after Normandy and Southern France in 44 and then the Pacific in 1945. These ships shot huge amounts of ammo wearing out their barrels.
Like many things in SH3, it is unlikely to have BBs as they were really used so having one in a convoy on occasion is fun. I was lining one up and he saw me and opened fire with the secondary guns and then the main battery. I dove quick but had my tower and both scopes destroyed.

ty for posting the original file
:P

The part it would crash at is the part where after you load your saved career, you choose to load you latest ingame save file, then when that file finished loading and i was about to play, it would crash, i tried 4 times and it kept happening.

ty again

Yesterday I was cruising off southwest of Ireland looking for single merchants. I have spotted a two-ship convoy consisting of one C3 and one coastal merchant. Well sinking the costal merchant almost hurt me as she stopped precise at the spot where the C3 had sunk. I suppose they were picking up the survivors.

After I sink them both my sonarman heard that 4 warships were coming my way. Assuming that the ships send S.O.S before sinking I dived to take cover. When I dared to rise my periscope I saw that this task force was made of 3 destroyers and one escort carrier. As this was the first carrier I ever saw in the game I did not heisted to sink her with a snap shot . It is a pity that I was not able to watch her sink, as I had to evade from the destroyers.

What I do not know is whether this 4 ships task force was a cover force for this 2 ship convoy or it was coincidence that they where near these ships.
