Thought I'd post this pic I took of the Nautilus recently. It was COLD when I snapped this photo at 4:44PM Monday December 19, 2005.
If anyone would like a larger version for download, just let me know.

Only if I forget about Admiral Rickover, and his insistance that nothing be modified or otherwise improved during the course of her active duty. :-?

Not true! Nautilus had improvements in her reactor plant and weapons system, to name a few. We even carried Mk48 torpedos (as well as Mk37 and Mk14, the latter for exercise use, only). :arrgh!:
And, how 'bout this for a modification?

What kind of mod is that?
(And who is the modder?)

From a recent speech by RADM Richard A. Riddell (Nautilus's last CO, who I served under):
"In the beginning of my three and a half years in command of Nautilus, we were involved with the Mobile Acoustic Communications System, or MACS, which was a research project to obtain fundamental data on long range propagation of sound. This project required a huge antenna on the after deck of the submarine. The antenna would transmit an acoustic signal to a receiving submarine or surface ship well over a hundred miles away, with multiple simultaneous signal frequencies, various antenna angles, different ocean bottom types, and a variety of weather conditions.
"My most vivid memory of our time with MACS was the ability of the human body to adapt to the ear-splitting acoustic signals that were transmitted every few seconds. This went on for days and weeks at a time. Somehow, we learned to live with this noise—to sleep, watch movies, and even play poker on Saturday nights."
I can confirm from personal experience the extreme tediousness of listening to this pinging, day after day, night after night. :dead:

Damn, that sounds awful Bill. I would have rather ridden the Seawolf 575 when it sported that giant doorstoper on her bow. :o

Quite possibly the stupidest looking modification of a submarine in history (well maybe second to the Whiskey Long Bin…)
And people say the Oberons sonar dome looks ugly

Aha! That explains this photo found in the Soviet Naval archive. Underneath was the inscription "Nogoodnik who must be eliminated along with Moose and Squirrel." ;)

Bill, the higher res version of that picture should be on its way to you by now. Glad you liked it. 'twas nice, and more than a little bit strange, being literally the only person aboard her except for the two naval personnel topside, when I went through a few minutes before closing time. One of the perks of living in this area.
