View Full Version : Do you have to return to base?
I used to sail back to base, but now I just checkout when I have completed my mission objectives and expended 99% of my torpedos.
Any thought on this.

No, you don't have to sail back. However, if you sail within 30km limit of your base and then exit patrol, you get a bonus of 100 renown for being such a good chap. Up to you.
I see getting back to base as proberly the most important part of your mission. Especialy so if your playing DiD style.
It can lead to some tense moments as you're coming back to base after a good patrol, with no torps left and perhaps some damage.

Well you can change that by going to the CFG/Basic folder.....and change it on your own...

I agree, that's why I always sail all the way back, right to the port. After spending your last torps and got a permission to return to base, you can easily get a bit overexcited and go 'Devil may care' and try to rush back to base. After 1942, on the Bay of Biscay, this is the most sure way to get yourself killed. Seeing the friendly sheers with trees and stuff sure is welcome and worth the trouble.

I use Rubini's Harbor Traffic Mod, and I always save just before getting to port, take a nice break, and then enjoy the sights as I return home in real time. It's especially cool since loading the 16k mod. You can actually see the light from the lighthouses at almost 20 kilometers out when sailing into Kiel.

You have to sail back when your on 100% realism or you get the abondon career option.

I always return to base, and do the approach in real time, gotta be done, you wouldn't want to disappoint all those nurses and the band now would ya? I'm wondering if late in the war if you could have the scenario in Das Boot where the allies attack the port with planes...I'm in early '43 currently so don't know what will happen..

Jumping into a Zeitkugel and going through a wormhole back to base takes the bottom out of this game IMO. But it still ain't anyone elses choice but yours. ;)

I think that must be more renown return to base :nope:
i change the renown to the same amount if i arrive to my patrol grid. :yep:
I just go withing 30km of the base and hit ESC. No point on going all the way, as my comp stutters alot when in harbors. :(

I don't think it's there, even in the Real U-Boat mod (I actually opened the scripts and random layers up in the mission editor, but I didn't see anything closely resembling fighters going for La Rochelle - at any time  ). Funny, as that's one of the things people will be looking for.
However, it would, in my opinion, suck so badly to actually have that U-96 scenario happen to you. "Yay, I've sunk 4 merchants, a carrier, a light cruiser, and the USS Nimitz time-warping trough that cyan tunnel - and I made it home! Ye-haaa!" ...Then you die :rotfl: .
I had an old version of HT (would of been from about 2months ago) installed and started a patrol to test it, the base commander thought it was a good idea to send me out in the middle of the night though..
I was using TC to get to daylight so I could see all the nice ships in the harbour, at about 7am just after the sun had come up a swarm of bombers came and destroyed the entire base :o .
So the HarbourTraffic mod will give you all sorts of wonderful suprises, but I haven't seen anything like that in the regular game.

You have to RTB! The whole point of patrols is not to get tonnage... but to make it back alive! All kinds of stuff can happen on your return home. Just cause you fired off your last torp doesn't mean you are out of the fire just yet.
On a side note, who looks for Francoise (sp?) in those buildings while departing? I sure do! :hmm:

I only return to base properly on two occasions:
1.) Im trying to advance the game clock. I dont want to be in 1940 forever.
2.) I still have a deck gun to use on the single merchants. Cant attack a convoy, but i still got shells to lob over at tommy. Of course this is coming from a captain who sinks everything red. If i track a sound contact and pop the scope and it turns out to be a fishing boat, tug, or trawler - he gets a broadside of AA guns and heavy flak. :arrgh!:
Otherwise no, dont have to return to base and its not really worth it.
Did not return to base Kiel here what happen :D
I was off the coast of Norway just south of AN 29 was down to 7 torps
and fuel was getting close to 50% Weather was stormy, lighting and Rain.
So I though wonder if I pulled in to Kristiansand which is our port now
and see if weather would clear :D pulled into harbor and rain seem less
but visibility was very bad bridge said warship " Sir ' Looked to rear
and her comes a German destroyer type 34 heading in to port out of storm. So I follow the DD into the docks Visibilty still very low.
Saw another DD 34 at anchor. pulled up next to dock and saw all kinds
of folks on dock's Raining like cat's and dogs and they did not have any rain gear on :rotfl: saw on guy with a trench coat on. Looked like a officer. So I decided to Dock there and see what happen. So I end patrol and docked at Kristiansand Norway. April 28, 1940. Start save at port of Kristiansand date May 12. 1940. One crew man had a U-Boat Badge
Due him. a Ensign. When I started I was in dock area up against the
a Destroyer 34 and had to reverse to get away from him I was getting damage. Pull clear of DD weather " Clear" So I am starting patrol 8
with full load of fuel and torps and a got renown points 837.27
to add for a total 4773.18 My grid says " Null" and I am to return to Keil my home port. So pulled out Kristiansand May 12 ,40 and headed west
across channel And guess what the weather is getting cloudy :D
And waves getting bigger am I heading for another storm :damn:
"OH" one more thing I saw this wrote on a Building in port.
"Montagerwerkstatt" What that mean in German?
Beat's anything I have seen those Folks standing out there in Rain :rotfl:
So I had fun docking there at Kristiansand.

I always sail back to home port after a patrol. I used to back my boat right into the pen, but after a couple of times doing that I just quit when I'm close enough.
Zero,
That sound's Wise :|\ Do use taking a chance of sinking Boat or gettting
a bunch of damage that would not make the Repair Team very happy.
They are ready for shore leave.

Same here. The water reflections of the harbour cause things to get very choppy for me (Fx5900u)
