Ive just had my first encouner with a mine. The effects were quite horiffic but my crew worked like trojens to bring the flooding under control. Here is the aftermath

Needles to say those who made it were happy to see dry land again.

Im surpised you survived,. Considering Whoever's in the bow compartment is up to their necks in water. E-Motors allmost the same, and the engine compartment isnt looking very good either. Your boat should have sank like a rock.
I had a moment almost like that just today. Barely stopped flooding. Lost 8 crew and all my fuel, along with most systems. By some miracle, I managed to fix up my batteries a little and crawl back to Brest on the last of my juice (I was only a few hours from port).

Closest call i ever had was this one particuarlly nasty incident. (U505 mission. as if this is a surpise) I had two ashcans connect to my sub. (type 9) during a long DC attack.
First DC landed on, and blew off the deck gun. The second one kissed the AA guns on the coning tower. In both cases the component took the burnt of the damage instead of the pressure hull.
Let me tell you, its very amusing to surface with a scorch mark were a deck gun once was and three mangled and twisted appendages that used to be flak guns.

well was realistic damage on or off...my guess is off
no, doesn't have to be.
Being one of the more realism-anal modders, I can assure you that I've gotten away with similar scenarios, as the one described by me above :)

Mines always on, but you know, ive never tried it with it off. If the OP's screenshot is from a game with realistic damage off, it honestly looks kinda fun. I honestly wish id come back from patrols with my boat having undergone some severe battle damage, or have to cope with stuff put out of action during patrol.
Most of the time your either unscathed or dead. Only ONCE have i ever had a patrol where i came back with damage, and that was just hull intregrity. Nothing put out of action, nothing to force me to adapt to a changing situation on the boat. (IE attack periscope out out of action, forcing me to use the observation scope or something like that)

my worst damage would have to be when a destroyer hit me head on in the command room area. I was watching him come up with my attack periscope and didn't think to take it down...I bet some english sailors were surprised to find a U-boat periscope stuck in the bunk room. lol

Wow, that's quite a whack you took.
Apart from replacing your dead crew, you might want to get someone qualified in damage control for next time.
Nice one for a close escape!

Don't worry, you'll get your turn :hmm:
My favourite memory was when a DD went over me, traveling in the same direction, it hit us hard with DC's. We lost both scopes, had a severe fuel leak, and were unable to fix the leaks in time.
So I did the only thing that could be done...
Tubes 2 & 3 selected for salvo, 4m magnetic trigger, open doors, ahead flank, emergency surface!
I jumped up to the UZO as soon as we were on the surface, Fire!
A few long seconds later, the DD was sinking and we were sitting immobilized (fuel leak :-? ) on the surface waiting for a tow home :arrgh!:
Definatly my best (if not horribly unrealistic, action movie style) experience so far
