New name for kangaroo meat

20dec05
AUSTRALIANS could soon be chucking a piece of "australus" on the barbecue if the new name for a slice of kangaroo makes it more appealing to diners sensitive about eating the national symbol.

Inspired by the fact that slices of cow or pig on a plate are known by the more palatable euphemisms of beef or pork, Australia's kangaroo meat industry backed a competition to find a similarly savoury name for cute kangaroos.

It was won by US citizen Steven West, who came up with the name "australus" while working at an hotel school near Sydney.

The editor of Food Companion International, which ran the competition, said "australus" sounded dignified and linked the meat with the home of the kangaroo.

"The new name may be a huge breakthrough for the kangaroo meat industry," Mel Nathan said.

Among the 2700 rejected entries submitted by people in 41 nations were kangasaurus, kangarly, marsupan, jumpmeat and MOM (Meat of Marsupials).

"There is nothing more comforting than a mother," said Californian Greg Richardson of his MOM entry. "In order to make kangaroo meat sound more comforting to potential consumers, I figured we could associate one with the other: MOM."

Kangaroo meat sales have grown 50-fold in the past decade to create a $200m a year industry, with Europe a major export market for the low-fat red meat and Russians lapping it up in sausages.

But Australians have been reluctant to eat an animal so closely linked to the national identity - and portrayed as intelligent and lovable in the popular television programme Skippy - so most kangaroo meat consumed locally is in the form of pet food.

The national quota for culling kangaroos in 2005 was 3.9 million animals, a number described by some wildlife activists as a cruel slaughter but defended by the industry as necessary to keep down booming populations.

The executive officer of the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia, John Kelly, said that while his organisation had helped sponsor the competition it had "no really serious intention of changing the name" at this stage.

I'll have another Skip please (sorry, make that australus  )

I don't understand the sensitivity about eating the meat when most Australians will plough into a kangaroo at 100km/h and keep driving without a second thought.

Speaking of which, here is Jim Richards hitting one at the Bathurst V8s at an estimated 190km/h:

Neither do I. It is such a lean meat and as you said people hit Kangaroos on the open road all the time. Though ploughing into a Kangaroo at 100 Kmph would tend to do a hell of a lot of damage to the front end of your car and would be hard to miss.

Wallabies and Kangaroos are not the same animal. If we were eating Wallabies then Wallabeef would be the go.

You know for living here, I've never actually eaten Roo, croc yes, but not roo.
Basically until it'd sold in wollies/coles (supermarkets) and in the butchers windows rather than being something you have to specially order I probably never will.

And that's half the problem with it, it's not really marketed at ordinary people, more towards the restaurant scene and their chefs.
I'd think ordinary people would actually by "Roo Steaks" or chops etc but the cringe comes from latte drinking capo's in Cafe's etc in darlinghurst and such turning their noses up at "roo". :P

Edit: good lord, I've just reach the "Bonnet" milestone, cat's topic here I come :-j

Yes, I know. We have a Kangaroo farm here in Israel, opened up several years ago in the Jordan Valley, south of Beit She'an, where they explain this in detail. There's an open area, where the children can pet and walk around the kangaroos. Lotsa fun.

Anyway, Wallabeef is still a good name for the simple reason that if someone places a kangaroo steak on a plate instead of a Wallabee steak, who's gonna know the difference? :rotfl:

I would have thought it was an Australian horse. Don’t Aussies ride in to battle on them and stuff? Or is it just that Crocodile Hunter dude?

Good luck with that one. Perhaps a boat ride in a tin can (dinghy) will change your mind.
