View Full Version : Canada vs. Denmark - Hans Island
Just an interesting poll, not trying to start a sovereignty war. :P For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, Hans Island is a tiny and pretty much worthless island between Greenland and Ellesmere Island to which both Canada and Denmark claim ownership.

If these two nations cant decide who owns this rock I'm going to invade and conquer it as the first territory of the ‘Empire of TLAM’!

Me? I don't know. I have enough rocks here, but suppose I'll back Canada. Unless Denmark is willing to give all residents of Hans Island Danish citizenship.
In which case I'll be the island's first permanent resident :arrgh!:

Hey, we can make our own!
We gave India theirs... and the Manhattan project :88)

tis true
canada denmark hasnt got a big powerful navy and canada has a lot of influence and allies so does denmark but both countries need to look.
hans island is nearer canadian terratory than denmarks greenland and there fore should be claimed as canadian terratory
failing that split it 50 / 50

Hans island isn't the point. The territorial waters around the island are :-D
It's in the Davis strait. There might be oil there (Which nobody can be bothered to go get now), and it's on the way to the Northwest Passage, which could, eventually, possibly, become an important waterway. In the summer, at least, when hens grow teeths.
But the politicians promised the hens dentures.

It's not in the Davis Strait, it's in the Nares Strait. Since the island isn't even in international waters, (it directly straddles the boundary between Canadian and Danish territoral waters), whoever gets it will not be gaining any new maritime territory. While there may be potential oil in the Davis strait, since Hans Island isn't there, that point is moot. It's also hundreds of miles away from any potential shipping lanes, such as the Northwest Passage. Frankly, I couldn't care less which side gets a lump of rock that is strategicly worthless, and has no inhabitants and no viable resources.
Just to illustrate how far Hans Island is from any potential Northwest Passage shipping route:

But if Canada really wants it, maybe we can get the US to invoke the Monroe Doctrine over the issue :arrgh!:.

RULE#1: Never ask the US for anything...
Or else we might just occupy it ourselves and establish a semi-pseudo-pro-US democracy.

Just because you can keep the vicious Danish invaders at bay do you really think you can stop us Americans?

I can't believe we're fighting with them over a stupid piece of lifeless, baron rock. Seriously, is this where our tax dollars go? Paying the morons that sit around and think this crap up all day?
Let them have the bloody rock. I really don't see the strategic or economical advantage of it. :shifty:

Especially when our none of our subs (which barely work anyway) and surface warships are ice-hardened anyway. We could cream Denmark's navy on the high seas, but since their frigates are ice-hardened while ours are not, they could travel in and out of our arctic waters during the winter months without us being able to do more than scream impotently.

You have almost a 2 to 1 advantage against Denmark's F-16s (plus the F/A-18 is a better aircraft IMHO). Achieve air superiority and bomb, 'poon and mav those Frigates out of the water.
Anybody got an idea for what to call a potential war over Hans Island? My pick would be the F$%#ing Freezing War. (a take off the Cold War) :D

Sincere "advises" from US :rotfl:
Rasmussen and Martin shall meet on Hans Island at dawn on a pre-arranged date. On a length of flat ground they shall stand facing each other, 30 paces apart. Each warrior's feet must stay fixed to the ground. At the sounding of the referee's whistle, each man shall hurl bales of hay at the other until one is struck down.
The victor shall rejoice as the rightful owner of the rock, while the loser shall be banished for evermore, the hopes and dreams of his nation dashed upon the rocks of abject failure.
