View Full Version : SH3 Fog and Wind. Can it be changed?

I was describing SH3 to a friend (via email), as he was interested about how well foggy weather worked. I told 'em it worked well, looked convincing, etc.

Also mentioned that fog occurs during very windy weather, or windy/stormy weather.

He wrote back, mentioning that whenever he was on the ocean (he sails a lot), he's never encountered any great amount of fog, while it was windy.

That got me to thinking; I also can't remember a single day/night when it was foggy, along with any appreciable amount of wind. All foggy days seem to have been extremely calm, with next to no wind.

So here I am after playing SH3 for months, sailing through 3 sorts of fog (light/medium/heavy), sometimes while the wind is blowing at 15 meters-per-second. :hmm:

I know modders have worked on waves. Is it possible to mod-away anything but the very lightest of winds, while it's foggy in SH3?

Holy crap, you bring up a good point.

I'm thinking in a hurricane-like storm, you might see fog, but other than that, it should be calm and collective when the fog has rolled in. Do we have any weather experts in our community? Help shed some light on this.

As for modelling weather patterns in SH3, so far we've all been stumped... :-?

'Holy crap', what a good way to put it :yep: .

That's pretty much what I thought too, when this friend told me winds+fog really don't belong together.

It's hard enough just 'seeing' a target when it's very foggy. Winds (big waves) mixed with fog make it even tougher.

I think the heavy fog usually occurs with heavy precipitation.

In which case it's just a bad choice on the part of the devs to call it 'fog', because it's just poor visibility associated with heavy rain. :hmm:

But then again, this is fog...

If you stand in the middle of alot of fog (I live in Vancouver Canada so its always got something to do with rain, fog, wind, wetness. However very little snow.) you can see thats its really just a mist somewhere in the limbo between gas and water. It swirls like a cloud. I never see fog with high winds. Either they misnamed it as CCIP suggests or they were just dumb and did it wrong. Either way I want to be blind and in calm seas. That would be fun. Double that with the "decks awash" thing and imagine how invisible you'd be...

That's not heavy fog though. You can still see for quite a distance - at least a couple of km, anyway.

I want to see fog in calm weather!

I can only imagine it.... sailing in calm seas in the early hours and light fog hugs my boat as we travel through the water on way to victory or death. :)
