I'm now patroling in 1944 and this is my second full campaign. In the first campaign, I saw a lot of variety in the convoys (at least that's how it seemed). I also had a patrol in late 42 or early 43 (can't really remember) where I encountered 8 lone passenger liners as I made my way across the Atlantic to my assigned patrol grid. Finally, I saw absolutely no task forces up close and friendly. The radio reports always had them so far away it was pointless to try an intercept.

Now in this campaign, I've seen task forces galore. Some may remember my earlier post where I sank 5 battleships and an Illustrious carrier out at sea. I've also encountered several Bogue Escorts west of Ireland. But also in this campaign, I've seen only one passenger liner (leaving the Gibraltar Straits in a convoy in late 1939), since then...zip.

All convoys have the exact same composition depending on their speed. For example, all convoys running at 9 knots have 3 T3's, 2 Troop Ships, 2 T2's, and a mix of lesser merchants. All convoys steaming at less than 9 knots show the bug where the ships are all disorganized, making it a turkey shoot when attacked.

I'm not sure what the explanation is but suspect it has something to do with the patch version. This campaign has been run entirely using 1.4b where the first campaign was updated several times as the patches were released. I also was using the World Mod for about half that campaign.

Have u tried Improved Convoys Mod?

Its excellent, ive seen many different types of convoys in 1944 (which i am now)

For example on patrol 49#(Late 1943), I was slightly above cuba, when i came across a medium convoy going 18knots, luckly i was close enough to attempt an attack. This is what i found 4-6 T3s, and about 3 T2s(the whole convoy was T2-T3 tankers). Escorted by about 4-5 destroyers. I destroyed 3 or 4 T3s, and 1 T2. I also sank 2 of the escorts, and made a clean get away.

Unfortunitly am now on my 51st patrol(mid 1944), and am off the coast of the United States I sank 2 escorts, a Passanger Liner(took 6 torps), 1 T2, and 1 C2. However am surounded by 1 destroyer and 2 corvettes armed with the latest Allied Toys - IE hedge hogs etc. The depth is only 40m, so its near impossible to evade. So I saved my game and right now am trying to figure out how to get out of this mess.

The world mod is where these came from. I used to run that mod but, found it too unrealistic for my tastes. I use the Improved Convoys Mod now and really like it.

Speaking of convoy compositions...
I got some contacts on my hydrophones, about 3 warships and 8 merchants, moving fast.
All my previous convoy encounters the convoy speed has only been medium or slow, can anyone speculate on what was in the convoy? Would of it been the usual large shis (T3s, C3s, TT maybe?) but just without the small ships that slow them down?

Ditto to the Improved Convoys Mod - I've now seen (mid '42) everything from small convoys with 5-6 ships to mamoth ones with over 25 ships. The big ones are fun to ambush from inside - if you can get them to "stampede" it causes havoc for the escorts trying to get at you and some poor merchant marine sea captains who get cut out of the herd, leaving me to personally introduce them to Davy Jones locker. :know:
