View Full Version : How often are you detected by escorts or depth charged?

Im kinda curious, how often do escorts detect you?
By detection i mean acutally finding your location and switching to active sonar, OR, the "we've been detected " message.
When do they detect you the most? Before, during, or after your attack? What year ?
LIkewise, out of how many patrols, how many times have you been under a good solid depth charge attack? ( And i dont mean the ones where the DD runs about a few thousand meters, drops a few ashcans in a half hearted attempted and then runs back to the convoy.)
Personnaly ive found that i litterally have to go out of my way for them to notice me (even in 1943), anyone else have this problem?

Not very much. When they do it's not very difficult to escape. Of course I haven't gone very far into 1943 in my career yet. :hmm:

If you attack at night on the surface they shouldnt detect you, fast in and out attacks. This changes of course when they can detect you by radar. If you are detected before you attack you got a badly planned approach
They know you are there the moment your first fish hits its target, if you have to stay submerged you will usually end up behind the convoy. Thats why escorts often rush to this area to hunt you down, and then its hard to escape undetected, specially later in the war.
I was depthcharged once by 3 destroyers for four hours real time before they finally lost me. But usually they leave after 15 minutes if they are not able to keep a lock on your sub.

Hmmm....it seems like they detect me all the time....I try to sneak into Valetta and am in the silent running mode and even stop when destroyers get too close...and every time I end up getting the snot knocked out of me.....

Usually after the initial attack. I fall into the category of having really dumb escorts. I've been playing this since it first came out and I can probably count half a dozen times I was actively located and seriously dc'd in a prolonged, concentrated attack. In the concentrated attacks the dc's were pin point as Gouldjg says. Most of the times tho the escorts are not really coordinated or if they are its a half assed attempt at best.
Very rarely will I be actively located prior to an attack(unless of course I do something incredibly stupid which has happened on occasion)

To be honest im looking too see if theres a trend with the DD's and if its just me, or if others are having simiilar experiences with escorts.
In otherwords im trying to see if dumb DD's are a real problem for other then just a handful of ppl.

DC - WTH is that ! :)
Its not called "Silent Hunter" for nothing ya know !
The only time I get DC is online when some stupid moron goes charging in all ahead full and draws the wrath of the escorts down on my local. Solution - an acustic up his clacker !

Whenever im sneaking in to attack a convoy i always run at silent speed. I sneak pass the destoyer screen then am smack in the middle. Here i usually will go 3 to 5 knots while inside the convoy because the destroyers have a hard time detecting me while inside due i think to the other screws. But its early days, in late 1942 & later i dont think i could do this as often.

I guess I am referring to the single missions....I just did Malta again and tried running around the escorts in silent run mode and got detected big time...maybe I have a bent screw.....or better yet....a loose screw!! Cheers

It might help if people stated their difficulty level.
At 100% I have made all the escorts 3 or 4 no 0.1.2 rated escorts anywhere anytime in my modded version. I have also increased the number of escorts (as well as type used to those actually there for that time period).
K-2005, I use the same method an angled approach (There are never less than 5 escorts so the gap is smaller than stock game)
If I sneak past I have mixed results and without reason. Sometimes the escorts charge in after the first hit, other times I can escape without being attacked. When I am found if they get a good lock it can be hours in real time with every turn salvation or walking into a spread so the tension is fabulous!!!
You would never have gotten near Malta in real life because of the mine field.
I find it safer in a rain/fog storm to submerge and wait for the merchants to appear out of the mist and back up in time for a shot. Harder to do as timing is critical but by keeping a close watch on escort screws they have a harder time finding you once radar appears (Spring 1941) the surface is no longer safe. I use no active finding, myself. I believe their radar signals being detected happen before my radar would see them and it gives away my position to be active.

Wulfman brings up a good point about difficulty level also as I have just found out I believe the sound level of the waves is a huge contributing factor (eg: big wave mod or changing the sim.cfg) Crew rating is yet another. So many variables to deal with. Following closely the work on the mods forum.

Wulfmann....what part of florida are you from?
check out wether generally speaking your DD's are "tougher" in single missions than they are in the campaign--- :ping:

I have 3 careers getting towards January 1943, so I'll let you know in a few weeks how things are after Black May.
Hasn't Beery been saying RUB 2.0 will be out around XMAS?
Most of the damage I have taken from DC attacks takes place just after I have fired my torps and they have a pretty good idea where I am.

U-Boats did not sneak into harbors. After Prein's attack, very lucky, IMO, could have ended different easily, no other boat did it other than midgets.

In my last patrol i was returning to home when i found a lone Destroyer in rough waters and heading to me.
i dived an wait until it pases in front of me, my position was very good, 500 meters and 90 degres, so i fired my last torpedo.
it fail, exploding at the sea botom and despite the periscope out, and the very visible cowning tower through the big waves it continues sailing like a blind bat. :stare:  :shifty: :hulk:
i think that i have a blind destroyers sindrome. :dead:

Bringing a boat into a harbor is quite literally taking a fish out of water, or like playing russian roullete with 3 rounds chambered in a 6 gun.

Well, sadly that's one of the limitations of the game. Unless somebody modded some depth charge launchers to replace the fairly useless spotlights around the entrances... :hmm:
I don't know how harbors were protected back then, but if I was the British I would be putting up some pretty heavy duty nets and maybe some kind of primitive ASDIC buoy.
