View Full Version : Favored mode of attack?
So what is your favored method of attack? Surfaced/night? submerged?
My personal choice is dawn/dusk submerged: I can use both g7a's and e's at whatever range; it also allows me to identify neutrals vs. legit. targets.
I always try to penetrate the outer column, with a view to gaining the interesting targets in the center of the convoy.

Submerged about 3K-3500 meters off to the side of the convy, with the bow pointing at a bit of an angle to the convoy.
I stay clear of the side running escort (for a little while), i reduce the manuverinig required to shoot at two targets (IE can target two ships very quickly and make their impact times nearly instant to one another), and i get a shot inside the convoy at something big fat n juicy hiding in the mid ranks if theres something there.
Also, since the DD's are entirely dumb, buys me time to swing my tail around for a stern tube shot. By the time im finished turning, i got a 1K to 1500 meter shot at the outter edge of the convoy.

Night surface attacks towards one side of the convoy taking out the first row of ships. Make sure you can outrun escorts and dont let them get too close to detect you. But this method is impossible during the last two years.
On heavily escorted convoys, or daylight attacks, i prefer a submerged approach. Position myself in the front of the convoy slow speed and wait until im inside of it. Needs some luck too, if the convoy changes course you will suddenly find yourself in a hopeless position. If you match the convoy speed you can stay in there submerged while reloading protected by merchant screws, its impossible for escorts to detect you.
If I can penetrate the centre of the convoy and fire my fore and aft torpedoes at once I'm happy. I sometimes try to time the firing so that they hit simultaneously. Tricky but fun as it doesn't give them time to zigzag and ruin the solution.
After that I really love a good bad weather chase. Finding a lone ship in the fog is fun and nailing him is exiting, especially when its a juicy one.
