What the hell was with the gratuitous references? "Maybe we should raise little duckies in the bilge...and feed the GREEN BOOGERS" "We lube up the torpedoes with vasaline AND RAM THEN BACK IN THE WOMAN!"...."WE WILL NEED VASILINE TO GET THROUGH GILBRALTAR!"

WTF. Please don't tell me REAL uboaters talked like this or Ima hang myself here and now

Bad english translations im guessing.

It's acutaly a bit more articulate if you watch the german version with engish subtitles.

That said, the engish version is close. but not quite on the money.

I was an American destroyer sailor, and believe me, the language, jokes and references can get pretty wild sometimes.

well the old phrase, "curse like a sailor" didnt come from nowhere.

Acutaly most military can get pretty wild with their jokes, regardless of branch.

I'm a Merchant Marine cadet and I can yell insult or profanity for two minutes straight without repeating myself, in two languages.

Believe me, these jokes are mild. These guys spend months without much feminine contact, if at all. And when you do see a woman, she's usually a... Professional, y'know? Manners and taste degrade. Vaseline jokes? Totally.

I mean, how else can you get a salty up the Seaway?

I'd say Das Boot turned it down a notch. Or ten.

Haha, I agree. You don't have to be a sailor to get all perverted and wacky. Ha, we do it in english class all the time. :D

And when you think about it....

Those german sailors were around our age....They were the flower of their generation and they were just as energetic then as we are now....

So why should we be disgusted with their language....we are not any better....

Twitchy, get the rope out.

And yes the movie was made in the 80s, Kiwi_2005, but it was all taken from a book written in the 70s, by a man who was on real u-boats in the 40s.

In the real U96 aswell. :) There was a thread on ubi.com forums, where some guy posted photos aboard the U96 taken by the Buchheim.

Too bad I couldn´t find the thread, those photos were amazing!

Edit: Here´s the link to that thread: http://forums.ubi.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/8631071743/r/8631071743#8631071743

Every photo expect that big explosion is taken aboard the U-96

Ps. Before someone will start the "That´s not the U96! Theres no laughing swordfish"- thing:

The high command feared that enemy spys could use the conning tower pictures to identify specific u-boats, so all u-boats had to replace their personal markings with the one from their flotillas or to remove them completely.

Yeah, Frenssen and Pilgrim with their dirty talking and disgusting habits are my absolute favourite characters in the movie  Miles away from the stereotypical Hollywood German.

I served 8 years in the German navy and the language from the "Das Boot" is still harmless in comparison to the reality. We have still conversed more rougher, particularly at sea after the daily evening beer. :arrgh!:

What is the fuss about? Nothing spectaular with those jokes. Any guy have heard worse jokes than that countless of times.

Are you a woman by any chance? I can understand your reaction then, in these days of feminism.

And just think; in his pictorial book "U-Boat War", it's said he took *5000* photos.......unfortunately, only a fraction survived the war, afterwards, etc.

That's what we're seeing; that fraction.

Me and my friends dance like that too! After many many many beers. Usually you couldn´t get me to dancefloor even if you threat me with a shotgun. :)

Ive been a military fire fighter fot the past 18 years. One thing I can tell you is when you stick a bunch of guys together for any extended period of time we start to de-evolve into our primitive barbarous states. Some of the things we say around here could curdle milk. Maturity level goes way down too. I mean, come on, We're a bunch of grown men that still get a laugh out of a good fart.

I saw a bloopers show once that featured that scene..it "was" one of the Pink Panther movies. Anyway...they had to do about 50 takes to do that scene...everyone in the elevator cracked up whenever they did the fart sound. They then tried to do something to warn the actors it was coming so that they wouldn't laugh....didn't work. They then did it without any sounds at all. They still all cracked up at the thought of it...and Peter Seller's face looking around the elevator.

Classic.
