Everyone here probably already knows about it, but just in case...."U-Boat Commander's Handbook"
Available on Amazon, etc. Had my copy for years now. If you want to know how things were *really* done, it's a must have.[/url]
And I'm finally having my copy in the first week of December :D
I also ordered the "The Type VII U-Boat", anatomy of the ship series.
Lol, when I asked from a local bookstore about ordering that Handbook in last May, the price would have been over 50 USD's, via Amazon I got it about 9 USD + shipping. :88) Well, finally I decided to order it and just few more days left... :smug:

VERY GOOD reading... :know:

Speaking of books, I just bought DAS BOOT by Buchheim.
This book is cheap, about 20$ canadian and it's 500 pages!
We've all seen the movie 3-4 times ( or more! ) now you guys must get this novel!
Nothing beats reading about a convoy attack in the comfort of your own bed!
The only down side so far is the German translation.

My tip:
"Mein Weg zur Scapa Flow" by Günter Prien.
Printed in 1941 as a kinda propaganda book.
I´ve seen people saying that I should order the "Iron Coffins", well I ordered it yesterday.
What your thoughs of the book?
Iron Coffins is very good book, the story is amazing . If I knew nothing about it and someone would make it as a Hollywood movie I wouldn't believe it's true.
PS. Today they arrived :D U-Boat Commander's Handbook & Anatomy of the ship: The Type VII U-Boat :sunny:
Just gave a quick glance at them and

I'm not a big fan of memoirs myself, for various reasons, but it's worth a read.
Well hell...I couldn't stand it any longer...that's all I've heard about is that %&#*! Commanders Handbook....so ordered it yesterday from Amazon.....
...just got confirmed...will be here next week

Good for you! And more from it: I've been reading it for the whole afternoon and evening so far (about half of it). It certainly will change my playing style for sure. Now, I don't have to guess anymore how did they do this and that. It gives you the frames to cope out there in different situations. Gives more "authentic" approach to the game. The game has it's limits of course but you can compensate pretty much with your own attitude, dead is dead and etc.
Iron Coffins is a great Book. gives you a good insight of how it really was from 1941 on....also U-Boat War by Buchheim, Not a great read but has some great Pics! Just Finishied Silent Hunters by Theodare P. Savas. Wasnt that impressed but had some facts I didnt know about some of the commanders. :-? The U-boat commanders handbook is on my x-mas list, (as it is cheap on Amazon and the wife said that the kids could afford it.) So I have to wait. :damn:
I recommend getting Lawrence Paterson's U-Boat War Patrol. Amazingly detailed book about on of 'Teddy' Suhren's patrols in U564.

Try a search at Abebooks.com for ISBN number: 0939631210
The U.S. Retail price is $8.95
Just looked a moment ago and there were three available at this price.
Abebooks.com is also a fantastic source for books in general; especially if you're looking for something that is no longer in print. Basically, it's a search engine for all of the book stores that list their inventory with them.
I almost ALWAYS look here before buying elsewhere, then compare what I find with the same on Ebay. Saves lots of money this way.
Good luck!

I just bought this book (U-Boat War Patrol - The Hidden Photo Diary of U564) on E-bay for $12.50 and I highly recommend it. Fabulous photos!
Of course, Iron Coffins is the book to get if you wish to experience the gritty life and times of a U-boat commander.

I read both Iron coffins and Das Boot and I must say, I found out more about life on board a u-boat from Das Boot.
Even though I know it's a novel, Buchheim wrote it based on what he saw on real u-boats.
