I fired up SH3 and then just clicked on the start of my next patrol only to test something out. After moving the uboat less than 100 meters, my test was done and I pushed 'esc' and clicked on Return to Base. Much to my surprise I earned a medal for this!!!
What gives? Why did I earn a medal for doing nothing?
???
Did you get the medal or did you crew get it? After 2 patrols, your crew gets medal for serving for atleast two combat patrols in Ubootwaffe.

I got the Iron Cross. This was for the one minute I was on Patrol number 3.
I have not looked at the crew on my return from Patrol 2. I ran out of fuel and had to use the Return to Base button. If they all got medals what do I see?

I guess they were really happy you brought the boat back in one piece...
Did you have a bad time with navigation in the Academy? :P

Thats right, I could award the Iron Cross to one of my crew. But I have not been awarded one myself! :shifty:
Shouldnt the commander of the uboat get one before any of his crew? Also seen officers promoted to higher ranks than their commander in SH3...i dont like that :damn:
Well, you would get 100 renown by doing what you just did, but that's it. You get 100 renown just for ending the mission at your base. If the Iron Cross is based solely on total renown earned and not tonnage, then that 100 you got could have been enough to get you the award.

Simple. Don't let the game dictate - dictate to the game!
Now that SH3 Commander maps promotions and the awarding of medals in the same way that SH3 does, I've totally dispensed with using SH3 to dish out promotions or medals to my crew.
I award to my crew based roughly on how it occurred in reality. Plus, using RUb, I'm an ObLt by the beginning of the second patrol anyway, so never have issues with Officers ranked higher than me, remembering of course, that an ObLt z. S. is considered higher than an ObLt (Ing.). Any of my officers that are at ObLt rank and whose experience is greater than that expected of the rank is retired in order to gain command of his own boat (excluding the Ing who if he is lucky gets retired to become Ing on another boat).
Actually, I just recommended my whole crew for an EK2 in recognition of their actions above and beyond the call of duty in our latest patrol, coupled with having sunk in total 100,000 tonnes across all patrols.
As you can see, I'm fairly methodical in my approach.
