View Full Version : The Movies: Just a note to let folks know what I'm doing.

Hi folks,

You might have noticed a drop off in posts recently. I've become heavily involved in a new game called 'The Movies'. It's awesome. Anyway, since the folks on this forum might be somewhat interested in general war topics, I'm here to let you all know that I've made a WW1 action film. It doesn't have anything to do with submarines, so forgive me for posting somewhat off-topic, but I figured folks on this particular forum might have more interest in this than on any of the other forums. If you can bear the large download the movie is freely available at www.beerymod.com/TheyGrowNotOld.wmv. If you watch it, please let me know what you think.

This I gotta see!

Speaking of your being away, I might have to contact you in the next short while for some possible tweaking suggestions re: survivability for the final RUb :yep:

What did you make this from, Beery?

I thought it was absolutely remarkable. Very moody and grim - you couldn't hope for better for something from WWI.

Technically, it's really well-executed and very clean. I thought the sound effects were a little on the light side - but maybe I'm spoiled by Hollywood and the 'oomph' they give everything.

Subtitles are usually a bit of a distraction, but in this case they actually added to the World War I feel; sort of like watching a silent movie.

I'm very impressed, for sure :)

Wow, that´s impressive! How long did it take to make the movie?

I started this morning at about 6AM and finished at about midnight. I had a couple of breaks for food, but I'd say it took me about 16 hours to make that film. The Movies really gives a lot of flexibility - you can make almost any sort of movie you want: romance, action, Sci-Fi, Horror, Westerns, Comedies. Unfortunately there's no U-boat set though.

I also have another movie online at www.beerymod.com/SpiresofMarmitron.wmv. It's a Sci-Fi movie, and it was my first serious effort at making a movie using 'The Movies'.

Hey, if anyone wants to rate my films (I could do with a boost in the ratings), it's pretty easy to register - you don't have to buy the game to watch and rate movies, and there are already thousands of movies hosted at The Movies website. The website is at www.themoviesgame.com and my studio (where you can rate my movies and where all my low-resolution movies are kept) is at http://movies.lionhead.com/studio/Beery1.

Sorry. Now I guess I'm spamming the forum. Just ignore me or have the moderator remove the thread if I'm bothering anyone. I'm just pretty excited about this thing.

Thanks. That's high praise indeed coming from someone who is a movie master. The game basically makes editing and setting up shots a piece of cake. Can you believe I've had the game less than a week?

I thought the sound effects were a little on the light side - but maybe I'm spoiled by Hollywood and the 'oomph' they give everything.

I have been too lazy to make sound effects so far. Basically I'm still honing my editing and directorial skills. For the WW1 movie I decided to do a sort of voiceover narration (in the form of subtitles) and I cranked up the background music just so that I could put all sound effects more in the background (because the stock ones simply aren't that good). I think it turned out pretty nicely all-in-all.

The great thing about the game is that the AI actually makes movies all by itself if you let it. Sometimes the results make sense, but often what results is hilarious - sort of like an Ed Wood movie.

I have used your Red Baron II mods for years as well as your SH3 mods. When you said that you were going to be moving on to other games a few weeks ago, I was wondering what game had captured your interest. Pretty good movie for the time you have spend learning this new game.

This game really took me by surprise. It was kinda low on my radar because I'm not really into 'The Sims' type games. But with the movie-making element, this has to be one of the best games I've ever played.

I've heard of this game before, but I never was particularly interested in it until I saw this - it is rather neat, indeed.

And if it's anything like the Sims - I'm sure it's moddable enough for someone to eventually build a U-boat set. Then we'll have our Das Boot :88)

I'll definitely need to check it out sometime, thanks Beery

(16 hours? That's also very impressive. It'd take me twice longer to make an SHIII movie of the same length, and it'd only be half as good)

Well there is an aspect of the game where you run and manage your own Hollywood studio. You manage your actors, crew, lot, all kinds of things. That part was ok for awhile but thankfully you can by pass all of that and go straight to the movie making if you choose.

There is a pretty good sandbox mode on it if you hate that micro management stuff.

Then you can create your actors, shoot your movie using all sets available, use all costumes, and make your masterpiece!

That is me. I've worked on a whole bunch of simulations and strategy games - even a couple of sports games. I've been modding for about 15 years. The first game I made a mod for was Red Baron 1, which was released in 1990.

Camaero
11-29-05, 01:51 AM
Wow! I used that mod for B-17TM8th every time I installed the game. It really changed the game and bumped up the drama. In fact I think I will go play it until SHIII gets here!

You do good work.

I hate myself for this, but being an old "beckmesser" i can´t resist:

WW1 movie? Go fire your props department. The weapons are wrong in some cases. One of the germans wields what appears to be a H&K MP5. The uniforms are wrong for the germans, too....

The game only allows certain props and certain uniforms. There are no WW1 Lee-Enfields, even the British uniforms are wrong, and I had to improvise for some of the details.

Nothing changes it seems. As usual I'm being criticised for flaws in the standard game. I studied WWI for ten years, so I'm well aware of ALL the film's anachronisms, but I can only use the tools I'm given.

Beery you are always being usefull, this time you helped convince me not to buy this P.O.S..

Thanks!

Yes, it's all wrong, details were already mentioned so it's no use to repeat. When I was a kid I used to shoot war-movies, just like Geroge Lucas, and even we were more accurate than that, and we had to improvise all of it as we had no budget at all.

This movie feels empty to me, I see no emotion anywhere, the soldier doesn't feel hatred, neither do I, and why should he or I feel anything if there's nothing to feel? There's no tension, no drama, no fear, no excitement, no hate and no love, the movie is too short to show us a bond between the soldiers so if Mr. Bad Actor #1 says he's sad because Mr. Bad Actor #2 died in his arms we have to take his word for it, maybe his jokes were really so good that he pitties he'll never be able to listen to them again?

How about some artillery? Grenades? Flame-Throwers? Tanks? Bi-planes? Trenches? Forts? Collapsible scenarios? Bullets digging holes on the walls? There's none of that in-game? Only semi-auto Lee Enfields and Mp5's? Maybe it would've been best to leave war-movies out of the game.

None of this is your fault of course, those are the game limitations and nothing can be done about them, unless it's modable, I've never played the game so I don't know what you can or cannot do and how hard or easy it is to shoot this movie, so it would be unfair for me to judge your labor, I guess you've made a good job for a software that is more of a "game" rather than a truly "3d Movie Studio" or something along those lines (like the ancient Microsoft Movie Maker).

If there's room for modding in this game, I believe you'd be greatly needed in that department, for me, I'll just wait untill it reaches the bargain bin and buy it for 12.99$ to play for a few days untill all these limitations drive me out of it.

Beery
11-29-05, 12:59 PM
Wow! If you feel that way about it, definitely don't buy it. I think you'd be missing out though.

It's not good to get caught up in nitpicking details. Some of the things you're criticising are decisions I made. If you don't empathise with the characters, that's because I chose to make the story very simple and a little detached. It has nothing to do with the limitations of the game.

11-29-05, 06:12 PM
Aye, the mp5 was a little strange. Still, did enjoy it, considering I'm at college studying filming and sound production I'm having second thoughts about projects for the coming year and possibilities. :smug: Brits based On the Durham Light Infantry or just a general light unit?

Very good and very interesting. with a game like this that has scope for a lot more I'd have thought that there would be pepople making new bits and bobs to add to sets and stuff.

I'd like to try it but am worried that I'd be limited by sets and stuff. I'd love to make a Hunt For Red October type thing.

I thought ya did a great job.....I am type of person that likes to incorporate different programs and see what ya can do with them....Like in Flash I know you could import that whole .avi file and add other effects etc into the movie ..I.E. Layers and such...another cool program "Free" program is Terragen...awesome program for terrains...On my site you can see some examples of it and flash etc....

A good web site I belong to which is free and a great place to maybe show case some of your movies is on http://www.renderosity.com/...Renderosity.com...a palce where artisits meet. ;) GJ keep up the good work.

P.S. and it's free...

They speak gibberish, but you can add a voiceover, and you can even get the characters to lip-synch to match your words. I haven't got that far yet, as I find the subtitles are fine for my needs.

Btw, is there a lasting peace with the Krull? I just hate cliffhangers. :88) :rotfl:

Yeah, it's a bit of a downer. Currently I'm waiting for the game's first expansion, because I'm kinda held up in pre-production on the sequel because the animal rape scenes are a bit hard to shoot. I can do the gorillas, but that's about it. I really want to get elephants in, otherwise the movie will lose all its meaning.

Yes, this beautiful game has been keeping me away from subsimming as well. It is really good, the filmmaking is fun and even the management part is very well worth it.
It shows in everything how much love and attention to detail has been put into this game!

Beery
11-30-05, 04:07 PM
I hoped I was being sickly humourous. I'm really not sure who would want to watch a movie about aliens raping animals, but I sure wouldn't want to make that movie.

I think it's a given that numerous expansions are part of the developers' plan. This is a cash cow that I'm sure they'll milk as much as they can.

Hey Beery, I have kind of followed you around in sims for awhile. The first work from you I used was from "The Mighty 8th". Your realism patch really made that game come alive! Now I just got SHIII and am using your RUB. Same thing as before. The movies is supposed to be a very modable game. I know it doesn't seem to be in your area exactly but are you planning to do any mods for it?

Beery
12-10-05, 08:29 PM
I'm thinking about it. Actually it would be a nice change of pace for me, because unlike SH3 it will probably involve a lot more graphics-based mods. But I'm not sure how open to modding the graphics will be. Developers of these kinds of games tend to be ultra paranoid about the potential for making nude skin mods (the horror!), so there's a possibility that the graphics will be difficult to mod. We'll see.

This is a good movie indeed. I've posted a rating and review. I had some criticisms, but altogether it was very good. I think this film is deserving of a high place in the charts, and if it's not already in the charts, if you signed up at www.reviewtrader.com I think you might get it up there. Review Trader is a bunch of players who got together because the standard review/ratings system is pretty much broken. I think you would get a lot more views by enteriung your movie in the RT system.

Something tells me this game is going to blow The Sims away in terms of popularity. Eventually, anyway. It's appeal is irresistable to the masses, I should think. Plenty of sets, and props. They'll no doubt at more as they go along. I can definately see this game being extremely popular. :)
