Ah, 50 years later and we still just can't seem to get it right. :D

Is this for real? If so is it a Mk46 torpedo that is stuck?

Excalibur Bane

As far as I know, it's real. I don't know what kind of torpedo it is. I suspect enough pressure wasn't built up to eject it properly from the tube. Hence the hissing sound before it launches.

Pretty crazy. I'd be jumping overboard, personally. I hope it ain't live :)

It's a MK46. Training torp (painted orange). Warshots are green.

Reminds me (for some odd reason) of the old Navy training video: Synthetic Line Snapback. Now there was a classic! Don't know if anyone else has seen it.

dont diss my friend for you find that many a thing that may be small rusty out of date could easily destroy the most modern most capible thing

USS COLE incident 2000

somalia 1993

and many others

america thinks to much of thier own invincibility and i tell you this no one in the world is invincible

First things first Kaptain......there are two types of ships in any navy in the world....Submarines being the first. The second are commonly known as TARGETS!!! Those would be the surface ships. How hard is it to take out an unaware and sound asleep target. The USS Cole was attacked by two men in a RHIB packed with explosives....and she was a TARGET!!! Pit any old 688 or even 637 class boat against an Akula, Sierra, Typhoon...you name it. The bottom line is the US Navy Submarine force is indeed not invincible....just better trained and expierienced than most any other nation in the world. And if I'm not mistaken were you or were you not intent on joining her Majestey's Royal Navy Submarines (a comprable ally to the US Navy Submarine force)? :hmm:

even the americans admit we have the better training no one and nothing is invincible typhoon oscar akula seawolf can all be destroyed.

you americans have some realy nice decent submarines they are difficault to handle and learn but there just nice.

the british are the same.

russian submarines are simple simple design simple tech it works they dont want to spend billions to find out it doesnt work or its going to cost to much to build as they have had prior experiance (papa sierra alfa)

i speak to alot of patriotic americans and when they get started they make it sound as if god himself could not destroy thier little country, it annoys me to have to say woo slow down your way ahead here and that could never be not yet

russia has some very good defences so does america but russia opts for simplicity rather than american complexity and in that way it could benifit either one

USS Cole may have been the target but she is a warship a ship that should be on alert 24/7 the question is why wasnt these people spotted why did she leave herself open ?

it comes as a great surprise a friend of mine went near a naval base for his holiday abroad forget the place but he went water skiing and jet skiing he and his friend was warned away from the US ship in dock and if they didnt comply they would be shot

again why did the USS Cole not see not do anything about it why wasnt thier people looking out

Its the calssic empirical delusion and its fed by the people. Thanks to years of "fight 'em over there" talk and a serious lack of reality when it comes to dealing with history Americans seem to figure GOD put a special interest in America. I mean honestly this is the country that has a hard time figuring out that when you try to invade a country and get kicked out you don't win. I've heard from some American friends that in their schools they teach it that they won the war of 1812. As I recall their justification is that they won the last battle which took place 3 months after the peace treaty was signed (communication back then was slow as sin). And dont even try to talk about Vietnam. This has lead to a serious lack of ability to rationalize failure and loss of life. Therefore America tries to prevent loss of human life in war by creating ultra high tech weaponry. Obviously it doesn't work. And now I hear they're lowering their standards for recruitment because apparently the benefits which have barely been improved since WW2 aren't good enough to bring in more recruits (I think I remember hearing that the family gets 10k when a soldier dies which I believe is still the same as in WW2). No offense to Americans but arrogance tends to lead to some pretty shocking falls. 911 by most standards wasn't so bad. I mean 3000 dead isnt that bad but its the principle of it. Right?

Yes, that was my intention. I can't believe you guys have to bring your opinions and your crap in here. Stay on topic. Either discuss the video, or shut up. I'm really not interested in your opinion and I'm sick to death of people and their crap spreading like a plague into other threads.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: You have got to be joking!

...from what I remember, Ivan - you stole the best boats and your future submarine development and designs from Germany (spoils of war?) otherwise Russia submarines would probably still be made out of wood and be steam driven! :rotfl:

Kapitan, when you reply "typical American", you may as well state "Let's argue pointelessly".

But it could still be risky. Even training torpedoes have propellant, and AFAIK are not designed to run dry. I'm not sure when it starts the engine, but if that happens while in the tube it might overheat something and blow op the engine.

As I understand it, it's powered by Otto fuel - but with a sea water activated battery - so it should be safe enough until it hits the water.

MK46 - Battery powered.

Motor does not start until after the weapon clears the tube.

From the audio portion of the clip, it sounds like the impulse air supply was not lined up. :damn:

Russian subs! They look real nice in a periscope from 30 feet beneath their keel. ;)
