I picked up a copy of SH3 finally today. I'll be loading it up for this weekend. Thanksgiving Holiday here in the United States, so we get four days off instead of the usual two. Yeah for me.
Anyway, having never played the previous games many of you mention, is there anything in particular I should be aware of when I start my own game? Any tips, tricks, or good tactics?
I have read the FAQ, and browsed this website for a few days. I'm mostly looking for stuff you all take for granted, but a new player might not be aware of.
Oh, and are there any Mods that you might consider a "must have"? Not something that drastically changes the gameplay, but rather something that strengthens an area where the game might be weak?
Thank you for your time, and I'm looking forward to my first kill. I pray that it isn't my crew...

Make sure you're patched up to 1.4b. Go to the ubi site and download the correct patch. When you install it, don't worry when it says you are installing 1.3... It's a minor oversight by the devs.
Get the latest free IUB mod on www.u-boot.realsimulation.com. Also, there are more mods on this site if you ever want to browse around.
When you finally get around to playing the game, definately start in the Naval Academy. Watch those tutorial videos too - they explain a lot of things.
Umm... There are more tips but these are off the top of my mind.
Oh, and definately stay in contact with the sub-sim forums. There's always something interesting going on or a new mod being released. The community is always very active.
And this thread is your friend: http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=30638 It's a list of most of the mods ever made for SH3.
Good hunting over turkey-day!

Ok. one or two tips.
First becareful when sending messages to BDU try to send them quick and then submerge. Theres talk back at headquaters that the British might of broken our enigma code. We're not sure but silence here is recommended.
Find out who your crew are, where they're from and how many patrols they're have done. If Hans looks at you strangely when you say raise the scope then get rid of him. IF he looks at you strangely get rid of him anyway.
Do not take on a BB with the deck gun.
And do not say out loud that hitler is a as*h*ole BDU always puts a neo nazi in each crew.
thats about it for now, but im sure your get more help from others.

Lots of good advice above, bit I'll offer some as well. Keep in touch with this group. There are a lot of smart , friendly people here who are very helpful.
I've found that in my time with SH3, the way I've played the game has changed, and this is a great place for information.
Welcome aboard!
:D
EDIT: Oops! Apparently I'm a helmsman now. I hate that avatar and I hope it doesn't last long! :damn:
Before you start the Naval Academy training, you might wan't to change/check difficulty levels first? If so, take a new career and continue until you are "in the office". THere you click that big map on the back wall and get to pick difficulty levels you like. Then, when you return to the academy, you should have that same difficulty level there as it is in your upcoming career.... There's a lot of different options in the difficulty settings.

Thanks for all the advice.
Is it better to start in the Happy Times? I'm assuming it would be. Gives me time to get my feet wet before the sour pickles come along.
How hard is it to earn renown? Do I have to scrimp and save, or will it be pretty easy to rack up?
Oh, and when I move to a new boat, to I get credit for all the renown I've spent on the hardware in the first one?
Sorry, these are questions the manual didn't seem to answer, at least not the first read through.

Hudson,
You make it sound like German ingenuity and technology cannot make up for Alliance airpower. Be careful, or the wrong person may here your defeatist talk.
Righto. My wife isn't allowing me to load it up until Thanksgiving. She's got this irrational fear that I might not make it in to work the next day if I start a career now. Past performance is no indicator of future experience, I keep telling her.
Good hunting, everyone.

The deck gun - a true friend!
(1) The deck gun can be used to sink most ships, especially in the early years - use it to your advantage. Since C-2's are sometimes a butt to sink, I always opt for the deck gun if conditions permit. Usually about 20-30 rounds in a concentrated area will do the trick.
(2) Switching often between the periscope view (for range) and deck gun (F10) will allow more hits.
(3) Always use the "aiming below waterline" tactic for sinking ships... most above deck shots are good for fireworks, but nothing else.
(4) Use the HE rounds before the AP rounds, they seem to work better for the "below waterline" shots.
(5) The starlight rounds can sink ships - I recommend those for either (a) smaller craft or (b) last resort when you've used up all your rounds. I hardly use them for their intended purpose. Note, make sure you are less thank 2,000 m away, as they will stop and light up, blocking your view for a minute or two.
All of the above are my personal preferance - Good Luck!
