its definitely 34 km, convoy or single ship encounter doesnt matter.
you begin to hear a convoy at 34km, same as a single ship.
tested with sh3 editor and 16 ship convoy, nothing smaller than a
c-3 in the convoy.
Good work, that's well worth knowing. Got a related question, though. I know (from reading your posts) that the max range your AI sonarman can hear targets is 20km, but is that always his max range, or does it depend on his experience/qualification/endurance? It would be nice to know, because there have been times that a target sounds like it's about 13km away or so, and my sonarman still can't hear it. It makes it tough to plot, because I don't know whether to go ahead and put 13km down like I thought, or to put a mark farther out, like 22km. Do you know?

trav, i read your questions, and im making the mission to test all your questions so we can get them answered. the mission starts off at 12:00pm, the t-3 is bearing 0, speed 16 knots,
range 34.945 km, course 180, relative to the u-boat. the u-boat is at periscope depth, speed 0 knots, course 0.
one hour 10 minutes and 46 seconds later the u-boat gets completely destroyed as the t-3 runs over it. i had to have the t-3 collide with the u-boat in order to get a truely accurate TSD solution
from mission start to collision.
9 radio messages inform the commander of the t-3's range in 5 km increments 10 minutes apart.
1 radio message lets the commander know what range and when the t-3 becomes visable in the periscope.
the primary objective in this mission is to help the u-boat commander estimate range by sound intensity, and the radio messages gives range at 5 km increments, but i made a list with time and range for every minute of the mission, you will know what the range of the tanker is by referring to the range/time list.
im not finished with the mission yet, but i think your questions will be answered when i finish.
i have to get in touch with harm's way, and cpt naultius again, as i think theres alot more that has to go into the sound trainer.
this mission is phase 2 of the sound trainor, phase 3 will be tracking a contact by sound, and using a sonar overlay for plotting target course and finding a CPA by sound. theres also one im going to make to show you how to get a visual contacts course and AOB, in your head style, just one or 2 simple addition or subtraction problems and youve got target course. you wont believe how simple it really is.
i cant remember the old german u-boat commanders name who said the simulations beat him almost all the time, in real life it was alot easier. but i believe him, i think it was.
Well the trainer sounds great, and I'll want to get my hands on it as soon as I can. I do a ton of hydrophone plotting, and I often find later on that some of my earlier plotted points were way off, like by 10km sometimes. It would be much better to have about a 2-3km accuracy on range, and this mission will help a lot with that. Then I won't have to rely on the sonarman so much. I'm pretty decent with the hydrophone, but I have a hard time telling the difference between 1km and 3km ranges, and those are the most important to be able to tell. I also can't tell whether the target is moving away or closing just by the sound, I have to plot it out. I wonder if that's even possible? I'm working on a single mission right now with 2 ships close to eachother, one is moving towards me, the other is moving away. Then I'll see if I can tell a difference.
Also, the comment you made about the u-boat commander, I've read that on this forum. Someone has that quote as part of their sig, but I didn't know it was a real u-boat commander. I thought it was just a normal guy who always got beat by the game, and was complaining about it, and someone thought it was funny enough to put in their sig, which it would be pretty funny. So that was a real u-boat commander? I'd love to find that thread, but I searched for his name on the forum, and couldn't find it.
I think it was Jurgen Oesten, He was advsiser to the SH3 developement team. He was a Uboat commander in WW2, born 1913. He probably said what he said about the sim being harder to be nice to the developers, and bear in mind not many 92 year olds are good at computer games!! (er...sims).......Maybe he needed the sensor mod to tone down the uber accurate DC drops!! :D
Regards
Well that makes sense. I don't know too many old guys that are worth a damn on a computer. Still pretty cool to hear from a real commander though.

I believe Oesten's comment was specific to AoD. it had one of his patrols recreated in a mission. Too bad there wasn't an interview with him included in SH3 as was done in SH2. He can still accurately recall the attack plots of some of his sinkings ! he also helped us get the correct sounds, volume levels of engines etc for DBSM-PS. :D

first of all, happy thanksgiving to all my fellow americans out there, may God bless you all, and this country, as for all the other nationalities out there all i can say is boy, are you missing a great meal today. :yep:
i finished phase II of the sound trainer this morning, (estimating range by sound intensity), but im not going to release it yet. just like the sh3 naval academy had 5 missions to it, i think there are at least 5 missions that i can make that will cover the complete subject of sound, whether its attacking, plotting or navigating, so im going to drive on with this, so that i can release it as a package in time for christmas. below is the readme of phase II , and trav and rules questions are answered in the mission.
Extract the file Sound_Ranging.mis into your SilentHunterIIIdata/singlemissions/english/directory.
preliminary observations
In war, only submarine commanders who possess distinctive tactical knowledge
and ability will be successful in the long run. In order, however, to understand
and master the tactics (i.e. of submarine warfare), it is necessary to be
thoroughly familiar with the weapon, and its characteristics and peculiarities:
for it is on these that the tactics depend.
In addition, complete success as a result of a thorough exploitation of the
possibilities of the weapon can only be achived if all the officers in charge
of it are trained to think along the same lines.
The theoretical knowledge of the weapon, and of the appropriate tactics
must be supplemented, in the last resort, by the decisive requirement of a
war-like spirit and an audacious outlook. The essence of submarine warfare
is the offensive! For the commander of a submarine, therefore, the maxim:
"He who wants to be victorious on the sea must always attack!" has special
meaning.
preliminary observations taken from U-boat commanders handbook
This mission demonstrates the maximum range of the hydrophones that you yourself will hear sound.
The mission is 1 hour, 10 minutes and 46 seconds long, and ends will the u-boat getting run over
and destroyed by the target.
Your mission is to learn how to estimate targets range by sound intensity: stay in the sound room, man the hydrophones,
and listen to the targets screws getting louder and louder as it closes on you.
12 Radio messages will update you as to range, and other events that will happen.
With practice you will be able to estimate range of a target by its sound intensity in the hydrophones.
A range_Time_List is provided so that you will know the range of the target for every minute of the mission.
Points to remember:
Hydrophone maximum listening range radius is 34 km.
Hydrophone maximum listening range diameter is 68 km.
