Hi all, long time no see.

Today I purchased an Add-On for SHIII in a German store for 25 Euro. It´s sort of unofficial made by "X1 Software/ Koch Media" and its title is "Seewölfe - U-Boote auf Jagd" (Seawolves - Hunting U-Boats).

Basically it´s kind of a mod compilation, but it has really nice features and seems to be quite professional (pretty much like the add-ons for MS Flight Simulator). Here are the features I like best:

- all U-Boat textures are HiRes now and they do look smashing

- new camouflage paint jobs

- all gauges are high resolution, too, so you can actually READ them

- historical ship routes and events (e.g. D-Day, Dunkirk etc.)

- 60 new cities, San Francisco is one of them (though I don´t know about the quality and detail)

- you are now able to refill on "neutral" ships (they are on their historically correct position and treated like harbours, technically.

- random radio traffic (haven´t checked it so far)

- "optimized" campaign (so they say, haven´t checked either)

- new minefields, searchlights, shelters etc. in harbour, ships in harbours

- escorts in dangerous harbours

- realistic hydrophone for ueber-destroyers

- some tweaks and changes for crew fatigue, depth charge impact etc.

- 22 new single- and 4 multiplayer missions

- Pacific is available now - you can play as American GATO in the Pacific, although graphicwise you still have a IX-type sub... they say they couldn´t change the graphics...

- little detail that really impressed me: new sky, looks smashing

All in all I guess it´s worth the money. The graphical improvement is really great due to the HiRes textures used.

The good thing about this add-on is that there IS an add-on, so I guess that means SHIII sold very well (at least in Germany).

Cheers, AS

umm... X1 Software... is bunch of thiefs. Look the mods that SHIII community have done and look the mods that are in the add-on. See any similarities? :)

So basicly you paid for mods, that are made by the community and X1 "borrowed" them and is now selling them in a one package.

That´s what I thought first. They do mention some mods, but all in all it seems they did some work of their own. I forgot to mention "scripted Hunter/Killer encounter" in the campaigns.

Wow. I can't believe someone actually bought this. Fantastic. This means anyone can start making off money of mods. Kinda of makes me want to NOT release the mods I'm working on personally (for another game). Feking thievs.

And all the people who made the mods and deserve a cent, get nothing but a thanks (at best). While these sobs are selling @ 25euro per disk (that's a LOT for a product like this - Splinter Cell cost me 45 dollars 2 years ago - and at around 33% higher than this 'expansion' - just to put this into perspective). They'll say they need this price to make up for CD cost. Right. Big games have budgets of several million dollars, in 10s sometimes. Obioulsy they set the prices to cover that plust the profit and volume forecast, but what is their cost? Fekin thieves. :nope:

Mod compilations like IUB, RUB, and the U-boat Ace War(Wolfpack) mod-campaign offer the same features and much more for free.

Why can't you do what the lads on UKtrainsim.com do, and that is to get people to pay for premium download time ( only £3 a month or £11 for 6 months, £20 for 12 months etc. ) or they have to wait in a queue with limited bandwidth. They have add-on compilation software for sale on disk( £4:50 ) which is very reasonable, and great if you don't have broadband! The money goes towards the upkeep of the site and all the contributors (modders) get recognition on the disk's readme. Seems a lot fairer.

It´ll take me some time to find out whether I wasted money or not.

I can assure you, it´s a total waste of money! :yep:

As sergbuto wrote, there is RUb, IUb and many other mods that are much, much better than Seawolves. Well, there is no freeware Pacific campaign so far, but the one that´s in Seawolves is a bad joke...

Also, if you have time read the 26-pages thread about Seawolves:

Alright, now that most of you have told me I´m an idiot because of buying what´s been offered for free I may dive deep and lick my wounds. On the other hand, I must admit I´m tired of downloading hundreds of mods (which often don´t work togehter) and I don´t have the time in the moment, so basically I approve of Add-Ons and I´m willing to pay for them if they are good. Don´t get me wrong, as far as Seewölfe is concerend, you convinced me that it was a waste of money. And now please stop kicking me, I´m such a sissy ;-)

That's what IUB is good for!

And keep in mind: if you buy an "add-on" that contains unapproved mods, your money goes to the wrong guys! Software pirates, to be precise.

Put RUB and IUB on disk and sell for £2 o.n.o for the guys who haven't got broadband or haven't got time to sit downloading loads of different mods that don't work together sometimes.
That might stop the pirates.

Unfortuantly this would be the start of the end for people to enjoy having free mods.

I am not completely upto date with all this X1 stuff but I know they have ripped of the modders and the consumers by charging and IMHO they are scum.

You all have to feel sorry for the people who spend hour upon hour never really playing the game but rather testing and tweaking and creating it to be better for us gamers, then only to stand back and watch some **** who has been lurking in the background, take your work, give a tiny thankyou and then make money on it. Well, from the legal perspective, this is pretty straightforward:

Mods that are created by someone are probably protected by copyright law (and if they are protected by US/UK/French etc. copyright law, they are also protected under German copyright law, as per reciprocity).
So anyone whose Mod is copied verbatim by X1 in this "compilation" has a potential claim against X1 for copyright infringement. The easiest thing would be to send a "cease and desist" letter to X1 and see how they will react. If they don't do business in the country you're living in, there is a chance that they will not react at all (and you probably don't want to sue them in Germany).

There are some potential problems that have to be considered, and to name one of them:
A lot of the Mods are actually using copyrighted material without consent of the copyright holder (just think about anything that uses material from the movie "Das Boot").

Just my 10 legal cents ...

Chuck

Sorry that your posts is not in the forum, but nobody want a discussions again.

It is amusing to see this tired discussion still stirring the pot.

Please, anyone that has a mod on Seawolves speak up. State the mod and make a claim here that this is the case. All I hear is the same old unsubstantiated grumbling with no real factual accusations..

Some people just can not understand how some do not have the time or capacity to download and install the mods and complain because some very small company made an add on that included, beside their own material, some mods. The fact I do not need to do so (I mod the mods myself in many cases) is no right for me to insist other people should learn what I know and make your own mods or get them and install them and make dubious statements like “they all work great because mine do so yours have to” Some people are not on your level and/or don’t want to be bothered.

Then there are the ignorant; “so sue them” people.

They have permission for what is in Seawolves.
Do I need to repeat that?
Is there any part of that you can not figure out?
Do I need to zip it and upload it so you can download it and understand it better if it is in the form of a mod?

They have permission from UBIsoft.
Do you understand that?
Do you also understand that most mods are UBI copyrighted and therefore any such unauthorized mod may (I don’t really know) dubious and X-1 is the only one that has official permission (that I know of.)
Think about that for a minute!!!!

While I do not nor ever have worked for X-1 (or any payware company) I have offered to be a naval history consultant to any dev, including UBI and X-1.
That is they are free to email me and ask about ships, weapons, events etc and I will offer an opinion.
X-1 has been doing that for their next project (I did not consult on Seawolves) and when you people see it half of you whiners that say you would never have anything to do with X-1 will be secretly buying this next add on.
That is all I can say about it.

This is such a long passed should be dead issue but those unaware of its real conclusion seem to prefer crying about it rather than just moving on.
Mind you, they screwed up in how they handled it initially, but that is long past and far less relevant than the Starforce hassle to SH3 people, IMO.

Most on this forum get the mods and know that if they have a problem many nice people will work with them to tweak their SH3 to be all that it can be. I have received much help here and it has made my SH3 a much better experience. But, I am a mod maker in other venues so moddong this and adding mods is what I enjoy. To insist anyone doing it different is not correct; a be like me or you are wrong; is in fact wrong.
