This came out of no where. A little bit ago I was looking at a forum when all of a sudden there was a thin, bright flash on the display. It seemed like it went half way down the screen. The picture quickly went in towards that "slice." The monitor made a clicking noise - sort of like when it powers down or up. The picture is ok again. Sorry for all the dumb monitor questions, but I really don't have the luxury of testing another monitor to see if it is really the monitor. Does that description sound like the monitor is, indeed dying?
Are we talking CRT here or some of that wierd and witchcrafty TFT things?
I'm assuming CRT, in which case in my experience any display flicker or on/off sound clicking noises is usually the precursor to hardware failure... Ive had a few 'old' bits of kit do some similar things- especially the 'clicking' sound. They have always died relatively soon after, but that's not to say you should expect the monitor to fail completely the next time you turn the thing on. One of my oldest ever monitors has just recently died, having been a trooper for about 5 years as the original primary monitor and then as my extra desktop realestate for the last two. Eventually the colour went then it just refused to turn on any more... I guess it was just too tired to carry on

Well, maybe the monitor is just sick and not really dying. My monitor was "sick" for 2 or 3 month (clicking noises once per day, flickering picture), I thought it would die, but that was one year ago and it´s still alive and the problems are gone! No, I´m not kidding... ;)
So maybe you are also lucky and the monitor doesn´t die in the next few days or weeks.

Oh, and check if the power cable or VGA cable are firmly attached! Also try to replace the power cable to your monitor.

Thanks guys. I should have mentioned it, but forgot. The monitor is a CRT. This February will see it to 6 years old. I guess I'm not surprised if it does die, though. That would be nice if it was just sick. I'm actually surprised at how long it has lasted. I didn't think it would last this long.
