This brilliant old black and white film starring Humphrey Bogart about the crew of an American merchant ship was on TV sunday afternoon. Although it's old by Das Boot standards there was some excellent footage in it of U-boats and crew etc., I wonder if anyone will make a mod so we can have the crew wearing the old black Kreigsmarine hats and uniforms?

Another good film from that same year (1943)
is "We dive at dawn" A British Sub movie.
That reminds me, there are no British subs in SHlll. :hmm:

Have Dive at Dawn on old video and it is quite good.

The Atlantic film with Bogart was really good when they started playing cat and mouse.

Das is still the benchmark to beat.

Das Boot is, as I've said before, the Apocalypse Now of naval war movies. There can't be another better one because once they've done it any immitation won't be well received. It just wouldn't feel right. I mean I can't imagine watching an epic tale of a daring U-boat crew combat the British escorts and their own doubts without seeing Jurgen Prochnow smiling rakishly at the green War Correspondant.

Its just not right.

If you haven't got 'The Cruel Sea' you're missing something memorable. It's the 'Das Boot' of the convoy escorts, and with a real Flower-class corvette in it too. Probably the best British war film ever made.

Sounds interesting. Was the film about the convoy or about a submarine like in Das Boot? Is it on video or DVD?

The film follows the careers of two vessels, a Flower-class corvette called HMS Compass Rose ( which is eventually torpedoed ) and a Castle-class corvette named HMS Saltash Castle, which the surviving captain and first officer are then assigned to. A real Flower-class and Castle-class were used in the filming.

Here's a link which tells you more ( including some photo's from the making of the film) and yes it's on DVD...I have it sitting there next to Das Boot.

"We dive at dawn" is also one of my favourites. If you like Jurgen Procknow as captain I think you'll enjoy Sir John Mills' portrayal of a hard nosed British sub captain. And with it being in black and white it lends more atmosphere to the period.

"Action in the North Atlantic" is one of the few films I ever seen with a wolfpack attack

Could anyone design a mod so the crew can wear the black navy hats and uniforms as in "Action in the North Atlantic? That would be way cool.
