View Full Version : Destroyers and detection range?

I lost my last U-Boat in the upgrade to v1.4 and then on my 2nd patrol in my new boat I was killed in a matter of seconds by an enemy destroyer.

I was sneaking into Lock Ewe and I was trying to avoid coming close to the roaming destroyers. However I miscalculated the patrol pattern of one of them and there was nothing I could do to prevent it passing within 500m of the boat. It was night and I was at periscope depth. I was already at silent running and I ordered all stop as the destroyer neared. The plan was to sit quitely and wait for him to pass me by. As I was monitering the situation with the external camera, she turns on her search lights, cranks up the engines and turns straight for me. I tried to get the boat moving but she was on me in seconds. Her bow smashed into the bridge and she drops four DC's as she pass over head. All four explode within 10 feet of the hull with predicable results. All hands lost.

My question - in your experience, how close can you get to enemy ASW warships with silent running, periscope depth and engines stopped without being detected?

Thanks,

M

Mate, I have had them pass right by me and not pick me up. Was she activly pinging you ?

Nope, the pinging started shortly after the search lights went on and that was it.

You where at periscope depth. Was your periscope up? they might have spotted that.

Scope was down, the sea was calm and the stealth meter remained completely green until they started pinging.

Heck I had a destroyer hit me by accident in Lock Ewe, and it continued on it's merry way. All this after I sunk a Nelson BB :o

Put it down to bad luck that it went active when you were a sitting duck. Call it the Johnny Walker special.

I guess I was just unlucky. I just had a fairly hair raising but successful trip into Scapa Flow (Chalk up one Revenge Battleship!) and I had some even closer encounters with destroyers but I wasn't discovered.

So have others found that unless you're being pinged, you are undectable to ASW ships with silent running, all stop and periscope depth?

I wonder....at periscope depth in calm waters, would someone be able to spot your siloutte from the watch station on a destroyer?

Especially considering if you were in shallow waters?

Well, it just happened again. This time in blue water with very rough seas.

I was initially waiting at periscope depth but I noticed that the conning tower was exposed in the troughs of the waves so I descended to 25m to wait until the leading escort of the convoy I was stalking passed me by.

So this time, it's all stop, silent running and at 25m depth. The destroyer passes within 200m of the bow and then "enemy is pinging us sir".

I'm guessing there must be a certain distance to escorts at which you will always be detected. One would assume this would vary with the quality of the escort's crew.

Does anyone have any data on this?
