U-173 is an IXC, Sept 1, '42 - sent to CA64, playing DiD, RuB 1.45. We hit 4 convoys near Grand Banks and managed to pull in our biggest haul ever. SH3 commander has changed the ship names, but here's what I think they were:

Coastal Merchant : 3706
Passenger Liner: 19622
T3 tanker : 11758
C3 cargo : 7460
T3 tanker : 11738
C3 cargo : 7461
Liberty cargo(?) : 6353
T3 tanker : 11737
C2 cargo : 5257
C3 cargo : 7443
T3 tanker : 11759
T3 tanker : 11740
Passenger Liner : 19623
Passenger Liner : 19624
Passenger Liner : 19625

-----------------------------------

Total tonnage: 174, 709

AAH! - 4952 renown (also completed patrol!). The convoys that leave Halifax and New York seem to each have a passenger liner - when I discovered this, I saved my last 2 torps for separate convoys. I ran into a bunch of convoys at Grand Banks - even after I was all out of fish!

You did have a good day :sunny:

Forget War crimes, BdU is going to welcome you home with open arms, and medals all round. Did you bring any deck/flack gun rounds back?

FYI if you are using the latest SH3Cmdr (r2.3) your original ship names are included with the new ones, ie "S.S. Paderewski (C2 Cargo)".

Now, more importantly, great patrol!

Got to upgrade the sh3 commander. Anways, I had pretty much spent everything on that patrol...though I had all my flak ammo - no aircraft encounters. Only a couple of 105 shells left. Not much fuel (after all of those flank runs to catch up w/ convoys). Anyways, U-173's gone now. Lost the very next patrol....

How did you escape escorts so many times in the Grand Banks? Isn't it pretty shallow up there?

well, it was shallow alright (50m in places). I guess they were just stupid as hell. Usually I attack two or three targets at once, while sitting in the center of the convoy at 90 degrees. Preferable fore and aft (2 in front one in back), the first at about 1500m, then the aft at like 1000, and then the second one at point blank (500). I often get 3 kills. Immediately after attacking, I go to the deepest depth possible at ahead-standard. By the time the escorts are near, I'm deep, and far out, and by that time, in silent run. But as you point out, in shallows this can be a biatch. Well, I got lucky this time; the escorts seemed a little dull - never detected me.
