When I was a kid in the '70s (man I feel old saying that - that was like, last century/millenium...), the thing to do on Saturday mornings was to watch cartoons with the sound turned off, and listen to rock-n-roll on the stereo. Now that I don't watch cartoons anymore(because they suck now), I do that with games.
What's your favorite music/game mix? Do you listen to the in game music, or do you have your own music playing, and if so, what's your favorite mix?
My favorites:
Mech Warrior2 / Theme from Conan the Barbarian
Sims2 / Moody Blues
X2 / Classical(Blue Danube, etc...)
Civilization / Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn(Blues)
Operation Flashpoint / Classical(William Tell, Flight of the Valkiries, etc..)
Doom3 / Any Punk or Heavy Metal(or for a change, try something that contradicts the nature of the game such as Tom Petty, the Beatles - Also Chumbawamba or Smashmouth)

I enjoy listening to old radio show channels on Live365.com while playing SH3.
The right era and feel.
Aces High - Jesus Built My Hotrod by Ministry.

Depends on the game, I think. Some games have great soundtracks but if I put in way too many hours it will sound old (e.g. morrowind, SH3). I usually only play my own music if it doesn't distract from the mood.
I tried playing SH3 with Sigur Ros in the background and it's perfect until ships start exploding and depth charges start dropping to Jonsi's dreamy vocals.

Rome Total War music was good, and midieval total war as well. Usually music if off for me though.
Sometimes i listen to status quo (down down deeper and down) on the submarine gramophone .
Im surprised no one put up the most obvious: I put the entire Das Boot soundtrack in my gramophone folder. Once I actually found and started attacking a SH3 convoy during the song "convoi" (when they attacked the movie convoy). Adds to the excitement immensely!
Where can you dl the soundtrack to Das Boot?

Heh,
Currently i've been listening to alot of music off of www.ocremix.org. it's a site dedicated to remixes of video game music. I'm sick and twisted .. and that's why I love this stuff :D

I found that Total Annihilation had the best stock music ever. Totally mood specific. Also Homeworld (1 and 2) had excellent music. ANd if anyone here ever played Grim Fandango they'll know that the film noire be bop jazz was excellent in it.
I don't often play other music with games. I find if Im not paying total attention to the music it gets old without me actually enjoying it.
But I think the ultimate game/music combo is Listening to "Ride of The Valkyries" while playing the Omaha beach map on DOD.

well I like to use the music I have on my xbox, or I watch tv while playing sh3 or I put sh3 on a low TC and play NHL 2K6 for xbox
1. Unreal 1 - No contest, the BEST music ever to be used in a FPS, you really felt like you where on another planet. Words can't discribe the feeling when climbing out the crashed spaceship (dark, nervous music) and the moment you suddenly stand outside in the sunlight, surounded by the calls of distant animals and (dunno how to call it) 'Enya style' music.
2. The race game Motorhead - all tracks fit the high pase perfectly and lift your adrenaline.
3. The Homeworld series - Fantasic relaxing music that really gave me the idea of being in space, wich changed to battle music when under atack, superb and unmatched so far.
4. Quake 1 - Nine Inch Nails kicked ass with this horror style music, it kept you on edge all the time and on many ocasions made me hit the roof when atacked by one of those jumping beasts.
5. Unreal Tournament - Not all where great but some could really lift the adrenaline levels like ones in DM-Turbine and DM-Liandri.
6. Alien vs Predator 1 - I'm a bit embarassed to say it but I actually turned of the music cause I got a bit TO nervous with it..
To me, Mafia had some of the best music ever in a video game. Just great stuff. That and Morrowind.
