I'm on my first DID (9/39) patrol---2nd Flotilla with PA BE 61. I'm halfway thru the Channel (off Brighton) all my DG ammo exhausted...5 torps (2 aft/3 forward)...I have 9 allies down (90 km radius of Dover, NE/SW axis)---small... 13.7 tons total. 75% fuel remaining. Should I continue to PA hoping I can get something with remaining torps....or should I head back to base....hope to get something else in Channel (if I make it thru) with a chance that I arrive back home with 5 fish and half a tank? Thoughts?

Head to your patrol grid, you'll get a lot renown for that. Besides with 5 tropedo's you can still sink at least two or three ships.

Good luck!

13.7 tons, divided on nine ships you say? In the lord's name, did you fire at rowboats?

That doesn't sound the tally of any teutonic warrior. You better loose those fish onto some weak allied ass.

Make that 13.7 "K" tons (my typo). Nonetheless...still a less=than manly man (teutonic) total except that I tend to go after everything that comes my way....and all I ran into was armed trawlers, tugs and small coastal vessels (unescorted). BTW...I elected to proceed back to base rather than continue to assigned PA with five fish [to hell with the renown points in a DID career on inital patrol in 1939] (thru the Dover/Calis narrows at night and mostly submerged) was harrassed by annoying armed trawlers and light destroyers (and aircraft) all the way to off shore Holland...and got three additional small coastal vessels...two off Le Have and one NE of Dover (all unescorted and, fortunately, all allied)). en route back. Now leaving for second PA off Ireland...and chosing Northern route....the Channel is VERY unfriendly. Hoping to find a convoy(s) with some tankers and larger cargo vessels this time. Playing at 65% (still need range and AOB assistance...and I love the external and event views to watch the fish hit...or miss)

The way I figure is that in a DiD carreer, the very first patrol is one where you can be stupid reckless. The reasoning being that if you should go down with man and mouse, it's not like you lose a long and distinguished carreer. Simply start over.

Of course, this doesn't really apply if you're really hardcore about this "dead is dead" business - ie., you only get one carreer period. And should you die, you can never again play SH3. Now, that would be as close to 100% realism as a sim is going to get! :D

(Perhaps there's a mod somewhere which totally trashes the computer should the player die? ;) )

Despite the fact that it is still a game....for me personally I still feel a sense of responsibility to not recklessly toss the lives of my men Assuming one is not patroling with the heart of a coward....one must remember it is very easy to order "Be more agressive" from the fourth sub-basement of a bunker in Berlin. It is quite another thing to execute those orders where survival is forecast as very close to zero. A boat at the bottom of the Atlantic with all hands makes no further contribution to the defense of the homeland. I want to balance the max damage to the enemy with surviving to fight several successful patrols. I'm not going to avoid a fight, but I'm also not going to conduct a suicide attack unless the risk/reward ratio or necessity demands it. As we said in the Teams: The government spent a lot of time and money training your ass....your getting killed is a waste of that time and money. Do not allow that to happen." Or, as Patton said: "You do not win wars by dying for your country; you win by making the other SOB die for his". But then again...maybe I'm carrying "realism" a little too far for a game.

Playing DiD, I would get your crew out of the English Channel as fast as possible -- there's a reason it's called the ENGLISH Channel and not the Now It Belongs To Nazi Germany Channel.

Of course, a) it's your first patrol, so as was mentioned before, you can always start a new career.

b) It's 1939, so the Channel isn't quite as off-limits as in later years,

and c) do plan out your escape route. If you go all the way through the Channel, how are you going to get back?

A sound philosophy. Many community modders have been working hard to stop the artificially high scores that most players seem to get in SH3. I think one of the main reasons why the game is an "Ace Simulator", in Beery's words, is because we take unnecessary risks, knowing we can always start over. We're even further removed from battle than the Naval staff you speak of, since we don't need to feel remorse over getting anyone killed. Had real U-Boat men posessed mentalities similar to ours there probably would have been a few more 100,000 - plus ton aces. There definitely would have been an even worse survival rate than was actually the case (as hard as it is to imagine).
