Ok been lots of heated political discussion recently so time for something different, so its poll time! What’s the best Mid Cold War Jet Fighter (1953-1967)?

Note I’m talking fighters not interceptors like the F-106 or MiG-25. ;)

I'll go with the old F-4 flying brick. Ugly, but reliable.

Yes my vote goes for the F-4 too. After hundreds of missions in a half dozen flight sims I've learned to fully appreciate the full range of its combat capabilities. There is almost no mission it can't accomplish, and some it can all by its self! Many a time I've been able to fight my way past enemy MiGs with a few Sidewinders and a lot of speed, neutralize air defenses with a few Shrikes and bomb the target with a bunch of MK-82s- kinda puts a F/A-18 to shame. :|\

MiG-21 man, sportscar of the skys. fast, agile, and short on gas...but hey what a ride.

F-104 Starfighter...

Fast and fits into several roles nicely, though it's no F-4.

TLAM Strike
11-06-05, 06:22 PM
The F-104 was the type of plane that will be with you till the day you die...

Seriously any plane that ejects you in to the ground as a life saving feature is not a good design! :damn:

Although I guess it proves that ‘lift’ isn’t needed for an airplane fly… :hmm:

  I like the F-4, but I love the MiG-21. I still need to find a good jet sim though.

I still need to find a good jet sim though. I feel your pain! I upgraded to Window 2000 only FS9 and Flanker 2.5 work, and I never really got in to Flanker. All my Jane's games stoped working and MiG Alley crashes a whole lot more on 2K. All my other sims arn't worth reinstalling.

I think I've go to invest in Wings Over Vietnam or Strike Fighters after I start work and buy a new joystick.

Did you try them with DOSBox?

TLAM Strike

No I didn't, but I think its something to do with not having the correct .DLLs or something so I'm not sure it will matter.

:) I just love the Phantom- still flying her in FreeFalcon Vietnam.,
'' Light ''relief from the F16.
Picture my Phantom flight flying over the delta at dawn spewing gas - silhouetted against a multi-colored sky.
Not PC but a very, very atmospheric scene.

But the 'bricks' more a fighter bomber than a pure fighter, so I cast my 'best fighter' vote for the MIG21.

How should I know? :88) I would have pegged you for a Phantom or Mirage gal since you Israelis sure now how to use them! We sure put a few of the IAF’s nasty tricks to good use over North Vietnam. :yep:

F4 phantom SAAB Drakon Mig 21 fishpot and a few others Yikes pick one Kapitain!

Planes have never been my strong subject, certainly not older ones. And I'm a flight-sim school flunky.

But yes, I know enough to say that the IAF really seemed to have squeezed the maximum out of an F4. They're still using Skyhawks, especially for training.

My son has a subscription to the IAF's glossy montly/semi-monthly magazine (in Hebrew). Very impressive pics and articles on this past, present and future. Every now and then, I garner a little bit more info from there for my general knowledge.

Not PC but a very, very atmospheric scene. When it comes to the Phantom screw all the PC crap!

"We train young men to drop fire on people. But their commanders won't allow them to write '****' on their airplanes because it's obscene!"

Oh yea Skyhawks, another great aircraft. One of the USN's A-4s managed to kill a MiG with three Zuni rockets in a dogfight once. My dad was assigned to a A-4 Squadron as a Aviation Storekeeper, VA-212. He was also with a A-7 Corsair squad VA-122 doing the same. Hes fond of saying "the A-7 could carry an A-6 [Intruder]!" Which is nearly the truth. :D

Free Falcon, is that the mod for Falcon 4.0 or an open source thingy.

Excuse my ignorance. Also is there any point getting Falcon 4.0 and putting on the mods now Falcon 4.0 Allied Force is out?

The Phantom of course, especially the latest versions. Over-powered, over-equipped and over-armed it could crush everything.
But a real fighter?

I voted for the F-100. A real good old fighter plane, that I identify with the late '50's early '60's, just like the MiG 19. I would also name the F-5 for it's agility, even the A-4!

The double ugly ofcourse.

Too bad Strike Fighters was such a lousy simulator. Enjoyed flying that era.

I'd have to vote for the MiG-21 as well. I like the F-4, too, but that MiG is cool. I remember playing Chuck Yeager's Air Combat. You could fly the F-4 and the MiG-21 is I remember right.

Xab:- ''any point in FreeFalcon now...AF is out''

http://www.freefalcon.com/

Well for sure you wont fly the brick in Vietnam in AF, nor fly the F16, or other aircraft in campaigns in the Israel,
European and Desert Storm Theatres.

AF has delivered much improved game stability and many improvements to the campaign engine.
You can run the ground war now. Both games have advantages and disadvantages so I run both.

Since the Avro Arrow was scraped, I'll go with the F-4 for its ability to bring so much to the battlefield.

hi,

Got to be "other" in the poll as i'm from the UK and we had some fine cold war planes, particularly notable were the Hawker Hunter and the English Electric Lightning.

KaleunThe Lighting was in Interceptor... ;)

But you brits sure built some great aircraft.

The only reason the Hunter wasn't on the list was that its first flight was in the early 50's so it was a few years older than most on the list... I would have loved to included it, but 'other' fills the role of 'older, but still in service'.

The F-8 Crusader for sure. The coolest jet fighter of all time, it could fly rings around a Phantom. Gotta love its unique look too, from its fierce intake to the variable indecence wing. Oh and it was the last of the true gunfighters!

Fox- Yep she was a peach to land on a carrier - the brick can be a handfull. :yep:
The Crusader is very nice to fly - but a bit bland.
You just have to luv the Panter - she can be a bit of a handfull but she really goes. ;) :arrgh!:

does the MIG-23 Count??

does the MIG-23 Count??

the MiG-23S ('Flogger-A') was accepted for production in 1969. Only 50 of the initial preproduction model were built, production switching to the first mass-production version, the MiG-23M ('Flogger-B') and its associated two-seat trainer version, the MiG-23UB ('Flogger-C'). The MiG-23 entered service in June 1972.
No its not in the time frame I'm using for this poll.

Wow, I'm the only one to vote for the F-105 Thud. Always loved that plane in Jane's USAF.

:D Justin

As you know the 'Thud' was a fighter-bomber pioneering Wild Weasel' missions in Nam.

:D Yep Janes had an earlier sim USNF (from memory)

The above list omitted the Republic F84E Thunderjet (Straight wing) and F84F Thunderstreak (Swept)
OK production of the F84E ceased in 53 but they lived on. 4450 Straights and over 2000 swepts built.
Probably the last of the pre-missile fighter breed, but the F84E was the first USAF jet fighter to carry a tactical atomic weapon.

But landing the Phantom on a carrier was a breeze compared with the 'Two bricks' F84E. Quite a buzz !
