Hi all, my first post.
Full realism except event camera... for learning to aim better...
I'm on my first patrol, I had one torpedo left...
Cargo ship, C2 spotted...
From periscope depth...I got perpendicular and close to target, I charged to full speed, at about 500meters... I fire my torpedo...
Boom, its hit, center... hour later its back end is low and its front end is high. There is weather, water waves go over the back of the ship sometimes...
Is it going to sink or not?
Previously while just learning, I did the time-compression and 3 days later a ship was still there. Planes had come, so I went underwater and time-compressed there. I tried ramming the dam C2 and neither I nor the C2 recieved any damage - instead I drove up over / through it. My crew's morale I think dropped some.
So this time, before I time-compress and tick off my crew, will the ship sink or not???
It could take days to sink, and if so, you will not get credit for the kill. It seems that after a certain amount of time has passed, you no longer get credit if it sinks. Do you have any ammo left for your deck gun? If so, then pound away. If the weather is rough you can try time compressing away several days to see if the weather will calm down.

Thanks for info, no AA gun or Deck Gun yet. I'll stick arround for maybe 72hours (3days) and hope for some luck.
I started in a Type II, I'll buy an AA gun as soon as I can. (I did a practice run previously and found that I could sink a fishing boat with it - so I want one, just for cases like this). Trying to play 'DiD' (dead is dead) as I've read it is called in here.
I might get a Type VII, but that boat seemed like more responibility than I'm ready for.
One more question, explain or post a link please...
How do I know which crew did something worthy of getting a medal? I had a 'Uboat Badge and a something I forget in first run) - I didn't know which crew to give which medal.
The AA gun is free for the IIA. Just double click it, doesn't cost anything. Like you said you can get small ships with it, but I haven't had any luck finishing off big, wounded ships with it. Maybe someone else has. I was in the same situation as you, a dead in the water C2 with it's stern nearly underwater and its bow nearly out of the water. After waiting forever, I broke out the AA gun and fired at the ship's cargo on the deck. After exploding all his cargo, he was still sitting exactly like he was before, so I gave up and used another torp on him (I was just trying to save it for later, rainy day you know.)

Welcome Schpeedy,
I feel your pain.
I just had the best patrol of my career, sinking 11 ships, 8 of them merchants. My last fish went into an undamaged C2 and brought her to a dead stop. :)
I had sunk all three of the escorts and we were out of Allied air cover so I just surfaced and hung aroung for a while. I had no more 10.5cm ammo, just tons for my flak guns. I used it all up, destroying all of the deck cargo but could not inflict any damage to the hull. :nope:
After about 13 hours, totally out of ammo of any kind, I bagged it. Headed for port. I expect a warm welcome but I sure would have liked to have sunk that last C2.
A previous post mentioned that after a certain amount of time, you don't get credit for the sinking. This is the first I have heard of this but I can believe it. I imagine that during the war many acts went unacknowledged. I know that those 8 B-25s won't be flying over the Fatherland. That will have to do.
Good Hunting,
JBC
I recently immobilized a C3 but was unable to use the 105 deck gun because of the gale force winds. I moved off a bit, out of visual range in order to punch up the time compression. After three days or so a wreck icon appeared on the map, but I did not receive credit for the sinking. So, I know for a fact that you can sometimes not receive credit. One time many careers ago I torpedoed a fat T3 tanker. It came to a standstill and slowly sank, taking about two hours game time to do so. I did not receive credit for the sinking. I tried various methods of hacking the files to try to manually give myself credit, but in no way was able to do so in such a manner as to be recognized by the game. That's one lump we sometimes have to swallow, I'm afraid, but not very often, thankfully.

There is definitely a time limit, then, because on my last patrol I disabled a large cargo with my last torp. I surfaced, and put my last 30 rounds of 8.8 cm HE into it and it still didn't sink....so I gave up and headed for home....about 3 TC hours later, the sunk ship icon popped up and I got the "She's going down!" message. I checked my log and sure enough, there she was....I guess if the crew alerts you to the sinking, you get credit...

Thanks again for the info's guys, in game I think I'll only stick around for 24hrs. I want a ton of tonage by war's end. :)
Again though, what about the medals? Who and why to give?

i find that crippled ships rarely sink in the long run - (i.e. slow leaks). I have a feeling that if a ship still has an intact engine, it can pump out flooded compartments and keep going. Reason being, I once hit a c3 hard - hard - and it was almost under - like right down at the waterline with decks awash, O kts, no engine activity. I left it and chased the convoy, expecting ot come back to it. After raising further carnage, I went back and found the c3, except it was back out of the water (normal draft or damn close) and was steaming at 7kts! This is like many hours later. So, I think they can repair.
I don't like to leave a wounded ship alone for too long for this reason - I also suspect that other ships can speed these repairs - ever seen a merchant hang back from the convoy with a wounded ship? I though maybe it was like offloading men or repairing, but can't be sure.
Gotta sink em while you can see 'em, or within a few hrs of wounding them.

Crippled ships are difficult to sink , unless you help with a torpedo or deck gun shells.
I prefer wait near at periscope depth and finish the ship as early as i can, after it i can go after to pursue the convoy.
The bad point is running out of shells, :nope:
I found a two ships convoy, without torps, and i sink a small tanker with only the gun, the other c2 ship scaped after i spend my last shell, i tried with the starshells ammo but without succes :nope:
This may seem like an obvious bit of advice, but you know, we can all sometimes forget a basic rule: Always mark your cripples on the map. The weather may change after you sail off after that convoy with the intention of returning to the cripple. If it fogs up in the meantime, you will probably never find it again.

If I have to leave a crippled ship for later, I like to draw a big circle around it with the compass (and the ship's location right in the center of the circle) then I can easily find it later even if I have zoomed out on the map. ;)

Well, when your'e out of torps and ammo for both deck gun and AA-gun, it's only RAMMING left to do :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
Is ramming even possible? I tried it once on a bastard C3, but didn't scratch me or him.

Again though, what about the medals? Who and why to give?
A Kaleun's choice; for myself medals are for things like a flak gunner that takes out several aircraft with low/little ammo.
Deck gunners that sink a target with little ammo.
A hydrophone man that makes that long distance detect of a convoy or tracks a warship at the right moment.
All are few examples...
Its your choice, rewards should not be impossible but SH3Cmdr is tempting program/tool to give 'em all Knights Cross for showing up sober after shore leave. ;)
Historically I imagine its like the real service - a matter of the CO...
Have Fun!
:lurk:
Usually I give medals to the crew on shift. If it's a U-boat badge then thats easy enough. It's when you start receiving Iron Corsses that it gets harder to award them. I usually make up a story to go along with the action. If there was an escort tracking us and some careful manuevering saved us I'll give my Nav officer a medal or if I perform a quick multi attack on a convoy and I needed a quick torp reload then I'll give a man who was in the forward torpedo section some recognition. In the end you can also think of the value a medal has and to whom it would make most sense to give it to. Having efficient crew is very important and medals really make them good. Really though its all upto the Kaleun. Best advice I can give is to treat your men with respect and dignity.
