View Full Version : Do destroyers ever run out of dept charges?

I'm stuck at Scapa Flow with my Type IIA 100% realism campaign, two destroyers on me for the last 30 minutes and I can't shake them for love nor money.
I managed to blow balast and get a lucky shot in on one of them, I think he's sinking or atleast crippled. There is still a V&W doing passes over me though and with critical flooding, lots 'o hull damage and stuff it doesn't look good.
This got me thinking, how much depth charges does a typical V&W destroyer carry? I'm not talking historical figures here, I need to know if its worth sweating over trying to save my tiny sub or that I should just surface and raise the white flag. Those POW camps back in old blighty sure look temping now. Its either that or davey jones' :dead:

Good question. (bump)

I'm almost sure the amount of DCs is limited. I sometimes noticed they were making attack runs on me without dropping any charges at all. This only occurred after they pounded me for a while so I guess they run out of charges but their AI does not take this into account. So not only the DCs seem to be limited the AI is too... ;)
Im using RUb 1.44 (and patch 1.4b) but I don't think it makes a difference concerning the amount of DCs.

In theory ships can run out of DC.
If my memory is correct it is something like 20 DC per rack,
K-Gun,etc. So if you a have ship with 4 racks then that's 80. :hmm:
Given that each attack run will usually result in 3-6 DC, that is a lot of attacks; multiply it by the number of ships...... :(
Now you see why I said in theory. :know:
Hope it helps

If I remember correctly, and I could be wrong, I think I read a post that said destroyers can make 6 attack runs on you, dropping a brace of DCs before they run out. I tried to do a search to find it, but couldn't, was quite an old post.

A DC Rack in SH3 carries 40 DC´s, so a early V&W has 80, a Hunt I just 40...
They can run out of Ammo, and they do...very often...

this is very interesting, because you can count the number of destroyers and the charges dropped or the number of explosions, and know when they are running out of charges. :yep:

Indeed, DDs can run out of DCs.
I noticed this once when i was attacked by a pair of (elite?) DDs. They chased me over 10h, but had only DCs for a few dozen runs against me. The rest of the time, they performed normal attack runs, but did not throw DCs.
Still quite annoying, because i was unable to get rid of them - torps empty, boat hull @ 21%. At last, they were sunk by own aircrafts...

Almost every submarine memoir I've read mentions pretty exact numbers for depth charge attacks (both US and German). I think they counted them as a matter of pride ("see what we survived!") and info for naval intelligence (perhaps an enemy stingy with DCs was lacking supply or manufacturing capabilties). In Werners "Iron Coffins" he mentions DC attacks up to 200-300 DCs, so obviously many vessels are participating and they have some means of re-supply while at sea.
