German awareness of faulty triggers

The magnetic detonator was a faulty b-tch indeed, at least before the end of the Norwegian campaign. Did German captains ever change the detonator to their electric torps by own initiative before an order was issued?

My type VII book dedicates almost 9 pages on the faulty pistols/triggers. Base on the book captains reluctantly had to follow guidelines handed down from Sub command even if they knew the Torp would fail. Complaints from crews made change after change implemented. But, it states very clearly captains followed directive and did not take it into their own hands. Really what could they have done ? Either fire the torp, or drop them overboard.
