View Full Version : SH3 Commander. I'm screwing up Qualifications.

Just installed the latest Commander-so far works great. I love the idea of
listing destroyed ships names in the log. All of the options, settings and gameplay settings work perfectly.
My question revolves around the crew qualifications section.
Heres the sequence I follow and please advise what I'm doing wrong.
Start new career thru SH3 Commander, set desired year & Flotilla
Launch SHIII
Choose same year & flotilla
Run first mission
After completion of first mission exit game.
Start SH3 Commander
Choose the existing career
Go to: Actions/Click for available actions/Go to crew manager
(at this point I should be able to assign crew qualifications to individual personnel..I think)
EXAMPLE;
I choose a stabsbootsman named Johann Jantz from the roster on the left. his name and rank come up along with suggestions box which says I may want to award him an Iiron Cross 2nd class. I click on the desired medal, the "Apply" box lights up, I click on that and.....nothing.
I then go to available qualifications and click on Radioman icon, the "Apply" box lights up and....nothing.
I know I'm doing something wrong here. As I understand it I should be able to hand out quals in base before start of next mission. Exactly where I'm at right now before I hit "Launch SHIII"
I'm a big fan of SH3 Commander from the beginning but I have never been able to get the awards/qualifications function to work for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found that I had to click on the crew member and then drag the medal, promotion or qual onto the picture of that crewman. It then came up with a "Are you sure?" screen. I did not even notice the "Apply" button...will look after I finish my current patrol.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Klmmicro-a bit of progress here.
Ok, I tried the drag & drop and it worked. Did not get any "are you sure" msg. I hit Apply and it apparently worked on the SH3 Commander screen and in the Commander crew roster the change took affect. Then Launched the game expecting to see my crewmember with the new qualification icon but the change was not noticable in the F7 crew screen. I then started the game.
Still not doing something right here.
The medals awarded in SH III Commander are only recorded in commander, not in the game, as I understand it. Klmmicro was refering to the games function, not SH III Commander.

The 'drag & drop', 'hit Apply' method is the correct way to award medals, qualifications in SH3 Commander.
As to which medals, quals, etc apply in-game, here is clarification from a previous post, courtesy of the mod designer:
"To summarise the Crew Manager component, as it seems to cause a lot of confusion:
-awarding *any* quals to officers impacts compartment efficiency as if they were awarded via SH3;
-awarding the *first* qual to an CWO impacts compartment efficiency as if awarded via SH3;
-awarding subsequent quals to an CWO, whilst being recognised in SH3, has no effect in SH3;
-awarding a qual to a PO impacts compartment efficiency as if awarded via SH3;
-awarding a qual to a seamen, whilst being recognised in SH3, has no effect in SH3;
-awarding the U-Boat War Badge has the same effect as if awarded via SH3;
-awarding any other medal, whilst being recognised in SH3, does not adjust resilience/morale/experience as it would if awarded via SH3;
-promotion/demotion, whilst being recognised in SH3, does not adjust resilience as it would if awarded via SH3 (although there is no demotion via SH3);
So a lot of what you can do in the Crew Manager *is* recognised and effective in SH3. It's really just the medals and some aspects of the qualifications that, despite being recognised in the game, are not effective in the game.
Now, whilst quals to seamen and extra quals to the CWO are not effective in SH3, they are still handy "markers". Also, I know of some people who believe that despite not being recognised towards compartment efficiency, SH3 tends to align these qualified seamen to their respective compartments, but I haven't tested that myself.
So, in summary, if you only want to award objects that mean something in SH3, don't promote (or demote), don't award EKs, DK or RK, and limit quals to 3 for officers and 1 for POs (note I'm silent on wound badges and front clasps as I have never been in a position to test and compare either). "
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response guys.
I'm aware of the certain "limitations" the actual game has regarding crew manager assigned qualifications & awards. Now that I can get the quals assigned to Officers/PO's by drag & drop method. The thing I'm coming up with now is that the qualification icon/marker doesn't show up in game.
I was attempting to assign "markers" to certain crew members more for placement purposes, if the compartment benefits from that great but I just would like to see the same guys back in the same positions.
Right now the test PO that I assigned a radio qual to shows up in Commander but the icon is missing in the actual game. This is not something that just happened with the latest SH3 Commander version. I've been unable to get this to work since the option was first offered. Thats why I'm sure that I'm the one at fault and not the mod.
Also I've read numerous posts regarding the crew manager and qualifications but haven't read anything about it not working so I guess I'm the only one.

OK, a few things:
1. klmmicro is getting mixed up with awarding quals/medals in SH3. In SH3Cmdr, there are no crewmen images nor are there are any such messages (however, if you attempt to close the Crew Manager without applying any changes that you've made, you will be prompted to save). However, he was right with stating that you must drag and drop. When clicking on a qual in SH3Cmdr, you must drag it to an available slot in the "Qualifications" box. It will then display within the Qualifications box. Award medals and badges in the same fashion. When finished, click on "Apply" and your changes will be saved.
2. The extract that Enfilade posted is also available in the SH3Cmdr Help.html file, (click on the '?' in SH3Cmdr), which explains the Crew Manager feature in more detail. In summary, everything you award in SH3Cmdr is recognised in SH3, but not everything you award has effect in SH3.
In the below SH3 crew screenshot, every medal and qualification was awarded by SH3Cmdr. All display as expected (I used the Repair qual a lot and awarded wound badges to highlight this - the DK and Clasp were not yet available to award).

If you are not awarding mid-patrol, and you are applying your changes (you've confirmed both steps in your posts), then I cannot explain why you are not getting the awards to show in SH3. I assume you are not getting any error messages in SH3Cmdr? And do you have this problem with all of your careers, or just this one? It seems that you're doing the right thing if the changes appear on SH3Cmdr generated Crew Lists...

JScones, thank you for your reply.
For the purposes of testing I am attempting to assign quals only in base before the second patrol and before I hit Launch SHIII
I am aware that the game recognizes the quals but the effects are another thing
Problem is not just this patrol - this problem has persisted since the option first became available some months ago thats why i'm sure I'm the one at fault here.
I will get back into the game later today and try again. will post an update later this afternoon(its 7am here, on the way to work)
Thanks again.
