it jumped out at me from the shelves at my local Barnes&Nobles... i was just browsing... not expecting anything special...
then the cover appeared in front of me... that magnificent depiction of the TypeXXIII making way in a grey, turbulent sea... the first time ever i had seen a Type XXIII taking the limelight from the ubiquitous TypeVIIc...
look at that... it's magnificent...
i stood for the next 20 or so minutes going through the pages... background info... narratives... color plates... great stuff for the UBoat War enthusiast...
...but i didn't buy it, like a dummy, i didn't buy it!!!
and i now, 11 PM at night... and i'm hoping it's still there tommorrow...

Also have it! It's good, a lot of info and info about everything. But if you want a better book, try to buy the "U-boat War Patrol". It's the patrol of the U-564 in the the Atlantic and Caribbean during the summer of 1942. The book is a photojornal of the jorney.
If you go to the amazon's sites you will find it.
Mike,
I've got it (same thing - browsing with my latte at B&N when it jumped into my hands). It's worth it for the pictures and charts. I have found a few annoying typos, but otherwise it's pretty good. I often sail with it and my U-boat Commander's Handbook at my side.

I just ran over to Borders during lunch and picked it up, along with Iron Coffins; took it up the aft tube on the price, though. It looks great; can't wait for the train ride home.
Here in the Netherlands it is nowhere to be found...like usual....
This country is like a desert if you are looking for nice books in English......
Gotta find another way, 'cause I want the book!
Thanks for letting me know it exists!

I'm reading Iron Coffins right now, I mean when not reading Subsims Forums or gaming. And....it is as well written as any historical military book I've ever read, including Band of Brothers.

Personnally I like it and have had it for a few months.
One word of warning, this is an amalgamation of a number of Osprey titles, such as Grey Wolves ,Kriegsmarine U-boats vol 1 & 2, etc. If you have these titles anyway, it is a duplication of all these titles by Gordon Williamson.

I bought it myself over the summer. IMHO it's an excellent reference and gives a well-detailed account of life on a U-Boat. I also appreciated the exhaustive stats on all variants of the U-Boat, including rare birds like the Type XIV. However, there seemed to be a slightly disproportionate amount of information on the submarine pens, of all things. Don't get me wrong; I loved the illustrations and construction details, but the emphasis on them was a bit much. I would have preferred some more substantial bio's of the U-Boat aces and maybe some better convoy battle descriptions i/s of bios for each and every U-Boat bunker. Overall, though, a solid read.
