Thermal layers are often found at the 300m-range in the Atlantic, but you could be lucky enough to get one within about 100, well within reach for a submarine.
The question is NOT if Germans could tell there was a thermal layer, but is the effect of one simulated in the game???
:hmm:

I have asked this as well - from what I have found in TRYING to test it - the answer seems to be no.....

I had asked the same question in the mod forum. Here were the responses.

Thermal layers are mapped into the game, but, unlike SH2, you don't get a "passing through thermal layer, Sir" message from the crew.

My last patrol I had sunk 2 T3's in a convoy and was of course now trying to evade one of the 3 crimson destoyers who already knew my position ........
I was at 75 meters and running silent but that didn't seem to matter as the depth charges kept comming .... I ordered 110 meters but I still didn't get away from the "eyes" and pings from above so I ordered 160 meters and my cheif gives me a dirty look, but complys with the order of course ... Told the crew " Time to pucker up boys , if a charge comes close this far down we aren't going to make it " .... Already was at 91 % hull intregrity :-?
I order all stop and waited .... Strange ! Destoyer passes directly over head and drops nothing .. He lost us :D .... Not sure if I happened to find one of these layers or not but we just sat there for a few hours playing cards till the hydrophone was clear ....
