I put two T1 eels into the side of a C2 yesterday that was traveling at 7 knots... One hit just behind the bow and the other hit just behind his midline... No sinkey. He slowed to 4 knots, listed a bit, but didnt sink.

Its the first time ive hit a C2 with 2 eels and not have it sink. Anyone know if this is usual? Im using commander, but realistic sinking/damage is off. Does commander automatically put in harder damage, or did I just legitimately not damage him enough to sink him by fate this time around?

I'm using Rub, and most of the time it takes more than one torp to down a C2 or C3. I'm thinking that it's been altered a bit to make aiming for the sweet spots more rewarding.

You can tell when you hit a sweet spot, because it makes a nice big secondary explosion. :D

For the Rub settings I have that to off as well, using vanilla SH3, I think... I know I didnt check the box. Was just wondering if commander edited some damage modeling by default or something.

One thing I do with the smaller cargo ships if they don't go down on the first torp, I'll hop on the deck gun. Blowing up thier cargo seems to help 'em sink faster.

Try setting the spread angle tighter so your torps impact the hull closer together.

Heavy seas... chickendung crew wouldnt hop on the deck gun. :)

Spread angle tighter... that is a GOOD idea. Not even sure what it was set at. Spreadshot tubes 1 and 3 withouth changing the angle. That may woulda done the trick. Big hole = more water.

It was like sept. 3 1939 or something close, too. UK had just gone from green to red and it was the first ship I saw I could sink. The fact I ended up NOT sinking it still annoys me. :damn:

I think it has to do with the damage modeling in SHIII. For the merchies, most torpedo hits in the bow are essentially non-hits. Early on, I have had this problem with both impact and mag shots. You get a hit in the bow area, but the ship does not slow down or seem to begin flooding. Now, with experience, I aim for the fuel tanks to the stern. This has greatly reduced those wasted bow torpedo hits.

However, with the warships, it is different. I have sunk both a Dido and a Fiji with single hits to the bow. The Dido was in a convoy and took one of my torps in her bow. So I swung my IXB around to fire the aft tubes. As I'm halfway thru the turn the Dido noses under. The Fiji was caught by dumb luck. I was setting up for a bow shot on a small merchant when the sonar man reported a warship closing at high speed, fearing a destroyer, I held my attacked to I could ID the warship. It was a darn Fiji doing 21 knots. To fast and to far away for a submerged attack, I surfaced, in full view of the small merchie, and want to flank speed for intercept. Now both targets are zig zagging, but I quick race ahead and submerge to a 3km range for a 3 torp spread at the Fiji. I take the shot, but with her zig zag, I only get one hit well forward. Quickly readying the last torpedo for a final shot at the fleeing Fiji. From a bad angle, I go with a mag setting, but at this distance, I'll be lucky if it dosen't premature. I fire my final shot, it barely misses the bow. The damn Fifi slowed a couple of knots and all my fore torpedoes are gone! I chase after her at max submerged speed, The Fiji steadily growing larger in the periscope, after about 15 minutes, she heads for Davey Jones locker bow first.

Who'd have thought merchies would be tougher than cruisers?

I've had a C2 cargo survive four torps once, but sunk a Nelson battleship with three (mortally wounded and dead in the water after two).

If you wait for it to sink after mortally wounding it, do you get credit for it? I'd heard that if it sinks due to storm damage or something you don't get credit...

Yes, that's true. I had a T3 that I put my last 2 torpedoes into and it stayed afloat for some 24 hours before turning turtle. It sank during a storm and I received no credit. Nothing else was around except for my IXB and the T3.
