Hi all,
Is there any way to turn off the "We've been detected/spotted sir" comment?
As helpful as it is to know I'm about to be depth charged, it's not realistic.
I'm using 1.4b IUB.
Thanks

I´ve never tried it, but it shouldn´t be a problem to completely remove it.
Those are the relevant files:
WeO_S_We_have_been_detected_sir.ogg
WeO_P_We_have_been_detected_sir.ogg
WeO_K_We_have_been_detected_sir.ogg
WeO_S_We've_been_spotted_sir.ogg
WeO_P_We've_been_spotted_sir.ogg
WeO_K_We've_been_spotted_sir.ogg
They are data\sound\speech and speech_en. Either remove all of them from every subdirectory or replace them with an "empty" ogg. Maybe SH3 CTDs if you just delete them.
The next files are data\menu\en_menu.txt and de_menu.txt.
Replace 596=We've been spotted, sir! with 596= and 601=We have been detected, sir! with 601=
Try it and let us know if it works.

Or "Holy dirty undies Batman! I think we're in trouble now". :P
I couldn't resist...

Thanks for that, I'll do that tonight and post results tomorrow.

Why is it necessarily so unrealistic to get this message? There are a number of ways that observant watch crewman or sound operators could tell whether an enemy ship was changing its behavior in such a way that would lead one to conclude that your u-boat had probably been detected, in subtle ways that aren't really modeled any other way in the game - I just figure that my crew is doing their job and I'd rather they let me know than wait till I figure it out on my own somehow.

Yeah, as soon as 'You Have been Detected" you will notice that the ship that detected you is now running zig-zag, making it a harder target to hit. -Nightowl

Deleting the .ogg's would work. SH3 probably won't crash because of that.
But regarding the deletion of lines 596 and 601 from en_menu.txt, would it work? Or will the message box look something like this:
16:48 CE: Hard to port
16:48 CE: New depth 36 meters!
16:49 WE:
16:49 SO: Warship now on bearing 204, Medium speed! Closing!
as opposed to default...
16:48 CE: Hard to port
16:48 CE: New depth 36 meters!
16:49 WE: We have been detected, Sir!
16:49 SO: Warship now on bearing 204, Medium speed! Closing!
I'd rather not have an empty space showing. Has anyone tested this??

I do agree with you to an extent but as you said, its all about the probabillity you have been detected. While it will certainly make it harder (and in some ways just as unrealistic), the tension is increased not knowing if that final periscope check got you busted or if that destroyer heading directly over you is about unleash death or still searching for you.
I didn't get a chance to try that fix last night but I will tonight.
