I need some 1x TC tips. I'm not doing half bad, but since the crew doesn't appear to report radio contacts, its completely hit and miss on whether or not I wake up in time to see them. I woke up two hours late one time, but I just was lucky that it was going in my direction and managed to intercept the bugger and send him to Davy Jones' locker.
On a side note, if you hit "Return to Base" instead of sailing all the way back, does anything bad happen?

You simply don't earn some renown points you otherwise would have received.

Is the reknown considerable? And does the distance from the base matter, ie. do I take less of a reknown hit if I am 200km from base as opposed to 900km?

The amount of renown that you get for not skipping to your base depends on how high your realism % is. At 100% realism, you get (I think) around 100 or 200 renown points - not a lot if you are playing at 1x. You have to be (again, not entirely sure) 20-30 km from your base when you quit to qualify for this renown. You will know because in the quit screen it will say "Dock at XXXX" where XXXX is the name of your home base. If it just says "End Mission", you won't get the renown, you are too far away.

Yes i got a handly Tip. When i tried playing SH3 at 1x i lasted 3weeks and had to retire from command, because i drank to much :D playing 1x as you would guess can get boring if you sit and monitor, apart from watching my sub skim the surface, for 5hrs straight i tended to drink alot of beer and fall asleep.

So dont drink and drive.... ah i mean patrol

Booze would make the patrol alot more fun... :hmm: I'm sure I can rustle up a designated driver
However I am making out MUCH better than Wrratt was. 1.5 days and I already sank a small merchant. Oddly, he was less than 200 KM from my port. Stupid english sailors.

synchronize real time with SH3 time

dive below 20m at silent running when sleeping real time to avoid nasty surprises from an unattentive watch.

read...alot. I personally study navigation techniques. I also listen to music off computer rathen than use the onboard phonograph--personal preference. It tends to get in the way when things begin to happen. Oh yeah...almost forgot, play solitare off computer also. It helps if you have another cpu to do real world stuff with...SH3 needs to be savored by itself.

don't forget about the "Windows" key on your keyboard. If you must backout of a mission, <backspace> to pause then Windows key--it's very quick.

Cheers,
