I recently saw something called Wolves of War in someones sig and I was curious so I clicked it, and it appeared to be some kind of hardcore clan. What IS it? The site isn't very specific.
We are not a clan :-?
It is a virtual war using SH3...... If you enlist, you will be sent to the 8. Training Flotilla to complete training. Then you are assigned to a combat flotilla and given patrol orders. Everything is set to as realistic as possible /feasible.
The progress of the war can be tracked by going here
www.wolvesatwar.com/log.htm

Currently we are in Jan 1942

Indeed there is no contact address.
However, maybe you can use WaW's enlistment form (http://www.wolvesatwar.com/enlistment.htm) to pass through your questions.
Otherwise, ask away here. There are enough WaWriors around, so it seems. :yep:

ITs been 6days now and im still waiting for WAW to email me whether to see if im accepted. another just had to wait 2 days. Im positive i did everything right. My German name is Hans Rahmlow who was commander of U-570 who surrendered while at sea. U570 got damaged by a Lockheed Hudson of No 269 Squadron RAF. The question "why do i want to join" my anser is i liked the rules they had to offer. Surely i would get accepted?
I mean WAW is now up to 1943, so time is running out huh? What happens when WAW reaches the end days 1945, do they start all over again.
Wow, dont hurry, Kiwi! We on january 1942! Not in 1943! :)
I don´t know what happens when we reach 1945... hopefully we start all over again!

Assuming at least ONE digital captain survives till war's end, they will not be done till around the end of March (http://www.wolvesatwar.com/log.htm). I would really like to at least try and join in at the rotation, if there is one. :D

He's either after autonomously firing torpedoes or a hard core team where everthing's on max realism settings only.
I assume the latter. :know: Of course, there are WaW members who play on 100% realism setttings. No one's out to stop them. :nope:

Dog-gone-it! I was miss-informed......I thought WAW only played at 100% (I sputter along in the 50% area!)....perhaps after the "Brothers Brendle" (named after two uncles) carreers are over I will re-think joining. I am running the two carreers from different ports and different sub types, trying to keep them evenly time framed and seeing the differences....one I have more aggressive, the other more calculating......

It should read "Wolves At War" - not "of".

This is the only setting that is optional, however it does not take away from the campaign or realism. I am currently redoing some of the wiki site to explain some of these things, as well as regrouping the site.

I think it would be a nice touch to give a patrol start date to U-boat when you are giving a new grid assignment.
Something like this:
BOAT
U469
GRID
BE99
DATE OF DEPARTURE
1/1/1942
Just my 2 cents...

I apologise for the delay. I toddled off to bed after my last post as it was after midnight here and I've just surfaced. Yes, I like to play 100% realism just for the challenge (except for external cam screenshots). The concept of W@W is very appealing. But if some people are using manual targeting and others are basically letting the AI do the work, to my mind it sort of makes any tonnage figures kind of hard to evaluate. I realise that you want this to be an inclusive activity and I'm not trying to be snooty about it. It's just the way that I prefer to play.
Yes, but as the WaW site says - it's really not about the tonnage. I think you're missing the fact that WaW is NOT a league in the competitive sense of the word. There's no competition going on, no "MVP" awards for tonnage, no effort to evaluate player performance based on sinking stats.
The key is improving immersion. And that's where WaW's sense of organization and community really comes into play. It really fixes one of SHIII's biggest "bugs" - the feeling that you're all alone out in the atlantic. If any kind of merit is given to players, it's for contributing to this community feel as much as possible. :)

That's an excellent point and I probably should have accorded it more weight before posting. But I guess a lot of real-life kaleuns were Type-A competitive types themselves...lol.

Hey, CCIP, where did you get that sig quote from?
The Oesten one?
From an interview with SHIII developers on... Softpedia, I think, a few months ago. They described their experience in working with Oesten on developing SHIII, and that's one of the things he's told them - he is, apparently, an active computer user.
The particular quote refers to a specific mission from a WWII sub sim (he didn't say which) which simulated one of the actual convoy battles he was in (probably the one involving the Malaya incident), and that was his response to playing that mission through :)

Yes.
It's called Google (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%2Bsoftpedia+%2B%22silent+hunter%22+%2B%22Jurgen +Oesten%22). :|\
Here's that bit of the article if you just want to read it:
Softpedia News: What was Jurgen Oesten’s contribution to Silent Hunter III?
Tiberius: First of all, he confirmed some of our research regarding the usage of submarines, the life aboard such a vessel and the tasks of a submarine commander. We also benefited from more obscure technical information unavailable anywhere else, like the famous dispute about « thermal layers ». The notion of « thermal layer » represents a property of the water to reflect the sound in certain weather and hydrological conditions. Herr Oesten has confirmed us that during the war, although the German navy was evolved from technological point of view, they didn’t succeed in devising a system that accurately detects these « thermal layers » so that they can be used in combat. We were considering about using this concept to allow the player to create specific tactics, but after talking to Herr Oesten, we decided to use it just as a random element.
On the other hand, he told us about some of his attacks, including the one against a British convoy, in which he succeeded in damaging a large warship, the Malaya battleship. Moreover, he offered us the perspective of a superior officer who also occupied the position of Chief of Staff for the North Sea theater of operations. This thing provided us with a better image on the development of the dynamic campaign. And for me, the anecdotes related to his war stories, are invaluable, because it’s very hard to find someone that was an eye witness to those events and who is capable of accurately and objectively relating it.
Cristian: At his 91 years, he is flawless person, regarding the coherence of speech, the way he drives …
Tiberius: Herr Oesten is a complete gentleman: he talks excellent English, he didn’t approve to take the cab or to let us drive. He plays the computer, and related to the anecdotes I’ve mentioned before, he told us he played a submarine game, and one of the battles he was involved in was being simulated there and he said that: “It’s very difficult to win, they beat me almost all the time. In real life it was much easier” (ha!ha!ha!)

I tried the german character but what was the password? im sure i never entered a pw when originally signing up to play waw. So i sign in new as kiwi i get in. I get a message i cannot enter until i get confirmation so i wait next day i get a email with title welcome to waw forums. Cool! i head back into waw forums and sign in as kiwi enter password. error message your username or pw is incorrect? Its not cause i copied pasted it to notepad when i created it the day before. I now cannot enter the forums and when i go to the 9th flotilla my german name is not there., yet i was told in an email before i have been assigned to the 9th. WHF or what the hell am i doing wrong. Im not blaming waw, because of the lack of info i am lost at sea. Most sign ups send you an email stating this is your username and password please keep in safe place etc., It should be explained in steps what us new comers have to do. Yes step by step.
I think where i went wrong was the signing up in the forums Do i sign in under the German name or create a new register???

Avon or or iblitz: I saw that you have to download the WaW realism mod.....can you use that with other mods, like IuB, or SH3 Commander?
I spent most of a conference call at work today browsing the WaW wiki, and it definitely looks very cool! I'm ready to enlist as well!
I wonder of there were any real u-boat commanders named Von Scheerbach.... :hmm:

Dowly,
I was trying to keep things simple and easy for the Flottilla Commanders by have just one posting for grid assignments in each Flottilla and the Kapitans just getting the grid assignments in that manner.
Your idea, has merit but there are some logistical issues with this. Each Flottilla Commander would need send out between 15 to 20 individual posts to the members of the flottilla in the respective Communications forum to assigne patrol grids, not every Kapitan sails at the same time or does every patrol, therefore some wasted time and effort for the Flottille Commander.
Trust this answers the reasoning for doing it the way it is done.

I have completed my training mission and am waiting for deployment to a flottila and a command of a U-boat.. have posted ktb in forum. I feel im not yet a member of waw until i start my first patrol with my new boat.
Also shouldn't training been just training, in the real war wasn't training going out and practicing dives/targetting etc., i see waw are making there own training missions. Anyways i like waw already it gives a sense your really contributing to the atlantic war.
Atlantic war? Hey! What about us in the 29.Flotilla!? :rotfl:
EDIT: Woah! I though the Med would be a deathtrap in ´42!
I`m currently returning from my patrol in WaW (Operation Taifun) and I sank 7 ships totaling 33,102t and didnt spot neither enemy A/Cs nor warships! I`m confused!
