You need real player or quicktime to hear these .
They take a little while to download but are very interesting to listen too . Now i know how important it is to run silent .

Interestingly they tell you that a submarine at periscope depth doing 6 knots , you can hear the propellor cavitation (beats) . A submarine at 250 feet depth doing 6 knots will have no propellor cavitation (beats) .

That's due to the water pressure - cavitation is the noise made by tiny vacuum pockets forming and then collapsing, usually around the propellor. As you go deeeper, the water pressure suppresses the formation of these pockets so you can run a bit faster before you start to cavitate.

Edit: Not a bad article which goes a bit deeper: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/silent.htm

Listen to "X. Surface Craft Sounds". Pay attention as the guy introduces the destroyer sounds - fido, is that you? :D I wonder if that was part of the original recording or during the conversion of the original record.

Good website though. Thanks for the url.

Very intresting. I wonder, does SH3 model this? Can I run at 6 knots at 100m and still be considered running silent? Or would the DDs still hear me?

They still hear you no matter what. SH3's modeling of sonar is fairly simple.

However, it is possible to change the maxdepth setting of hydrophones. So after a certain depth they would not hear you at all (no matter what sound you make)

I might alart Jungman to this, actually.

You ought to put this up over at the DW forums too (if you havent done so). Im sure they will be interested.
