View Full Version : How do you work this thing...(Radio Room Radar)?

I just find myself sitting and staring at the screen at a constant green line twitching around. The radioman seems to have no problem being able to detect ships and give me there exact bearing with no problem and he is just a seaman. I am the Captain of this vessel and I feel ashamed of myself for allowing a seaman to know more about the equipment than I do. Can a fellow skipper give me some guidance please? The bloody manual for this sim is worthless and is currently being used as a coffee mat.
Note to self: Must kick that seaman off the U-boat when we return to port, he is making me out to look like a worthless fool!! :nope:

From one worthless fool to another. I too cannot make sense out of the radar unit. I loved the one from SHII but this version seems less than useless. Either that or I am growing more and more verklempt as time goes by. :o

Wonder if having a qualified radarman manning the station might help ME be able to use the damn thing better? Perhaps it's because the seaman is not a qualified radioman that is causing me to not be able to use it properly? But that wouldn't make since, since he has already demonstrated that he is more than capable of using the radar by himself and giving me the exact location of ships! Heck, he is so good at using the radar I think I will award him with the Medal of Freaking Honor when we return from patrolling, then I'll kick his ass off the U-boat!
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I figuered out how to turn it off and flip the other two switches, and now i'm convenced nothing works as advertized. :hmm: I think I'll send it back to Sears.

I'm running SH-3 with 1.4 only. The first trip out with radar I became a destroyer magnet until I noticed it turned itself on everytime I surfaced. I had to manually turn it off everytime. The next trip into port I got rid of the radar entirely and haven't missed it, or the destroyers.

Yes, radar may be useful in crappy weather (heavy fog and rain), otherwise, it´s pretty useless unless you want every single DD and plane in the Atlantic to spot your sub from miles away.

Here's a tip from Hobnail...
Radar will stay off if turned off by you or ordered through the radio operator. However note:
* If you visit the actual radio station (R) the radar will be re-enabled. Why would you be visiting the station if not to use the radar?
* If you save a game with the radar off, it will be enabled again when you reload that save (bug).
* If you want to check whether it's on or not in any situation, best trick is to (either bind a key to view the radio/hydro cabin or goto Hydrophone station and exit into the cabin, I believe 'F9' already does this) look into the radio station and you'll be able to see the oscilloscope and whether the radar is active or not.
I've done enough checking in on my sparks to now trust that he's not violating a direct order unless it's the save-game bug thing. Enjoy.

Hope that helps,
OTS
