I've looked at the data & it appears that I'll be trading speed for a slightly faster diving time.

I kept my 7b for as long as possible- I like it :)
7c has faster dive time and also gets more tower/AA options I think later in the war... never got past 40-41 myself, either died, or recent format :( lol dunno if there are any other options the 7c gets over the b..

I like the look of the VIIB with the net-cutter, but I don't like it's conning tower type 2 urgrade :(

Beside from looks I find them very similar. I would keep the B if you're saving for a IX, but if you want to stay with the VIIs then you might as well get the C.

Aren't there some unresolved issues with the Type IX? Missing torpedos, etc.

That mainly occurs with the IXD2 and is easily fixed.

I think also the VIIC is, or meant to be, or was, more robust, more capable of going deeper, and generally more ocean-going than the earlier B version.

I read that some Captains managed to take them over to America for the Drumbeat, by illicitly carrying more diesel instead of fresh water supplies to extend their patrol.

Doenitz, by all accounts, was outwardly angry, but secretly pleased with this display of initiative and enthusiasm from some of his commanders.

The VIIC was certainly, I think, the ubiquitous workhorse of the u-bootwaffe, rather like the Mark IV panzer which served in the army right up to the end, despite the behemoth, and innovative creations that were produced in latter years in land sea and air by Germany in those final throes.

Either way, I traded up to a VIIC at the first chance, and often treated it with scant respect in terms of my occasional recklessness, but it hasn't let me down yet.

Vorsprung durch technik every time!
